I have been trying to restricting access to different forums based on user groups but I can't get it to work. I have a forum called "Teaching Staff" that I want only people in the group "Teaching Staff" to access. I have set up a "Teaching Staff" permissions too. I have attached some screen pics of the various pages on my forum admin area. Can anyone suggest what I have missed out? It is not working at the moment. When I assign a user to the group and login as them then I see 0 forums.

Hi Martin,
Hope your very well. Great question. Many thanks for your post and detailed information.
Sorry for my delay responding.
To restrict access to a specific forum you don't need to worry to much about permission sets. Permission sets are used to control access to specific options within forums you have access to.
To create a forum only visible to "teaching Staff" you would need to create a "Teaching Staff" member group within the Admin CP. Then locate the forum you wish to control access to. Edit the forum and simply link the "Teaching Staff" member group with this forum. You can find the member groups linked with a forum on the Edit Forum page. Ensure only the "Teaching Staff" member group is the only group associated with the forum.
You don't need to worry about the "Edit Permissions" option unless you wish to assign a specific permission set to a individual member group within your forum.
This forum will now only be sibiel & searchable by members who also belong to your "Teaching Staff" member group.
You can now use permission sets to limit the posting options & other behaviours within this forum if required. Is there anything specific your trying to limit other than access to the forum?
Also this documentation will be updated soon to reflect the latest 2010 release however the majority of this 4.1.4 documentation still applies to 2010...

These may offer some further insight. If i can assist further with anything specific your trying to achieve please don't hesitate to respond.
I hope this helps a little.
Kindest Regards,

Hi Ryan,
Thanks a lot for your help. You said "Ensure only the 'Teaching Staff' member group is the only group associated with the forum."
I did this and it works. However, now I cannot see the forum when logged in as an administrator. When I previously tried to select the Administrators and Teaching Staff member groups to have access to the forum it didn't work. Should I be able to give 2 or more groups access to a forum? Also, how can I get the forum back into my Admin CP?

Ignore the above please. I have got it working now by deleting all forums and starting again. Many thanks.
