I'm excited to announce our forthcoming InstantForum.NET 2011 update will introduce mobile support.
Our primary focus will be to provide iPhone & iPad, support however we are designing the mobile skin in such as way that it will work just as well on Android, Windows Phone 7 & Blackberry devices.
Whilst this is still a web application we are developing the new skin to look & feel (as much as possible) like a native iPhone/iPad application. The skins will be more touch friendly and will focus on simplicity allowing you to quickly catch up, moderate or post quick messages on the go.
You can test drive this skin now. Simply visit our community forums here on any mobile device.
It's still early days but I wanted to share with you some screen grabs of how this looks so far...

Can i try this now?
Yes. Visit our community forums here on any mobile device to give the mobile skin a test drive. We would welcome any feedback as a response here within this topic.
Can I choose a specific skin for mobile or tablet devices?
Year. We will be providing options within the Admin CP to allow you as an administrator to select a specific skin to target a mobile or tablet device.
Can I customize the mobile skins?
Yes. A mobile skin is just another skin within InstantForum.NET. As with all skins they can be customized through CSS, master page changes, editing the mark-up etc.
How will InstantForum.NET detect mobile devices?
Using the WURFL device database via 51Degrees.mobi foundation. http://51degrees.mobi/
While ASP.NET’s built-in browser detection support will be sufficient for many applications it will not recognize many of the latest devices unless you manually update e the browser definition files.
For example even the .NET 4 browser definition files are not recent enough to recognize Windows Phone 7, Android phones, Opera Mobile browsers, or Apple iPads.
We choose 51Degrees.mobi foundation as the foundation is being continually updated to support new mobile devices and features requested by developers.
Once a mobile device has been detected InstantForum.NET will automatically load the correct skin. .
We look forward to posting further news as this moves to release :)
Kindest Regards,
Ryan Healey Founder and CTO

This message was posted from my Windows Mobile 6.5 HTC TouchPro2 phone. I've had some luck with my phone all along but we' had several request access for their iPhones. They'll be delighted.
One suggestion I'd have would be to take the panel on the right side of the screen, I.e. search, latest post, etc. and make them tabs to increase the available screen real estate and improve the page loading times. This might not be as big an issue on the iPad as It would help on a phone.

Many thanks Eddy. I'm pleased to hear your users will be pleased. It's been a long time coming.
Great to ssee you using your phone to post :)
Currently those panels on the right are simply added to the bottom of the page with the mobile skin. They are collapsed by default and you'll need to scroll down to the bottom and expand them using the small arrow on the right.
I'm not sure what you mean by making those panels tabs. I'm not sure this would improve performance as those panels are deferred and load asynchronously after the page loads via the web services. It may reduce markup which can help on 3G connections. I'd welcome any futher information on this Eddy and I'm not sure I follow - please forgive me - it was a long weekend getting that skin ready for the first viewing :)

After I took another look I don't think the iPhone skin is recognising the Windows Mobile 6.5 because I see everything in the same format as a web browser.
Everything has always worked opn 6.5 except adding photos.

Hi Eddy,
Thank you for letting me know. We'll be working to detail exactly which devices will be automatically detected out the box for the mobile and tablet skins. Thankfully this is designed in such a way it's easy to add support for new or existing devices. We will simply need to ensure our skin works within the browser on the mobile device. Can you browse to the link below Eddy on your 6.5 device and let me know the user argent you see…
http://www.useragentstring.com/
If I recall 6.5 uses IE Mobile 6. We will try to support this Eddy and would welcome your feedback as we post updates here. I'll ensure I respond here within this topic so you can ensure the skin is detected correctly and the skin works as expected on IEM 6.
Looking forward to your response and investigating this further :)
