Joyce (8/30/2007)
I do have to post in reply to both of the posts above.

1. On Aug 23rd 12PM, I sent in a support ticket pointing to the community forum topic where I had identified the issue I was experiencing.

2. On Aug 24th 8:40AM, my support ticket still had no response

3. On Aug 24 10:16AM, I received a reply to the support ticket that the issue was believed to be resolved in SP1

4. As I had applied SP1, I replied Aug 24 10:27AM that this was done, but the issue was still occurring.

5. I asked again in my support instance for any further help regarding this - no reply.

6. On Aug 27 (three days later - NOT one day later), Ryan replied that they were looking into the issue.

7. That is when the direct email correspondence with James began - on August 27.

Do note that the zip files I had provided were NOT corrupted at this end. The files that you finally downloaded and extracted three days later after I supplied them are the EXACT same files that were provided on August 27th. Unfortunately I have no control over your Internet access that resulted in corrupted files being downloaded.

Yes I agree that we went down a completely different path for the last three days because James and Ryan did not know what the error message meant in relation to their software. And myself, although not being a developer of the software, went through the database tables and determined that their software makes duplicates of the attachment if a sender keeps a copy of the message in their Sent folder - which causes the duplicate query error.

Which brings us right back to the original issue I experienced 7 days ago that I am sincerely hoping someone might provide suggestions on what could cause the issue - as I repeat here - I am not the developer of the software, and am hoping that the developers of this forum software may have an idea on what "could" cause my issue so that I can troubleshoot my server to see what the issue is as I am able to re-create the issue on another completely different server (restored my backup on another server, manually setup the program files on this server, created the web site via IIS Manager, login via http://localhost/Default.aspx , send an attachment via private message to another forum user (without keeping a copy of hte message in the senders Sent folder), STILL results in the receiver being redirected to the forum home page http://localhost after clicking on the attachment.

The frustration comes from going through all of this over the last week to bring me right back to the same issue I posted about on August 23rd

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me any suggestions on what would cause clicking on a private message attachment to send the forum user back to the forum home page instead of being able to download/view/open the attachment - considering topic attachments are not experiencing this issue at all. To me, there is something specific about it being a private message attachment that perhaps there is some sort of rights or setting that must be set up or could be corrupted or whatever - that if the developers could provide that, would go a LONG way towards solving this issue.

Hi Joyce,

Hope your well. Many thanks for your response.

Sorry Joyce i do apologize if it took me three days to respond to your second request. I would need to double check on what caused my delay but for now i'll just try to help. We do respond to all enquires as quickly as possible. If an issue does require further investigation it may take us a few days until we provide a response once we fully understand the problem and if it's genuine issue or not.

From your initial post there was some confusion (on my part) with regard to the exact problem. This is why I suggested applying SP1. Since we received confirmation from you SP1 did not resolve the first problem we've been working with you everyday to assist.

We did mentioned a few days back that the first issue is not a problem with our software. We tested this extensively and setup several local test environments on various OS's / .NET / SQL versions. I suspect the repair of the .NET framework is probably what's resolved this issue on your server. It's hard to say without direct access to your server Joyce, but i suspect the repair may have reset a .NET configuration setting which prevented the attachments from working correctly.

Although we will always try to help and offer suggestions please understand it's not always easy to debug remote server configuration issues without direct access to the server or any knowledge of that server and how it's configured. We would not typically offer the suggestion within a support request for the customer the to re-install or repair the .NET framework until we've exhausted all other possibilities.

In this instance it's seemed to work for you Joyce and we do appreciate your time looking at this.

I don't want to get caught up in a discussion about our support services. I'm fanatical about ensuring every single one of our customers is happy. I do apologize for my initial delay side rom this delay (due to me) i believe you've been receiving responses daily on this issue and last night we were helping with this issue till 11pm GMT.

We are here to help Joyce. The important thing is to focus on the two current issues.

The first i believe has been resolved by your repair of the .NET framework. If you would like us to investigate this further Joyce access to your server would really help. If this is possible please forward a quick email to ryan@instantasp.co.uk If remote access is not possible we'll certainly research further to see if we can find any information on what could cause this problem.

The second issue we managed to replicate yesterday and we'll be working to provide some updated downloads to include the fix. Once we identify the fix we'll also send you steps on how to manually apply this to your current installation.

Sorry again for any mis-understanding Joyce and hope we can offer some further assistance. We do appreciate the work you've done at your end to identify these problems and i'm only sorry we could not of offer more helpful information previously.

If you need to contact me you should have a email with all my direct contact information.

I'll compose an email which explains how our attachment page works and the reasons why a user could be redirected to the homepage when clicking an attachment. You'll receive this very soon.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Kindest Regards,

Issue: Intermittently unable to access attached files to private messages using v4.1.4

To recreate:

  • Issue is intermittent so not able to recreate every time
  • User attachs a file to their private message to another forum user.
  • Attachment could be as small as 1K and as large as 5MB (occurs regardless of file size)
  • Receiptent clicks on the attachment, and is redirected to the forum home page instead of the file being downloaded or opened (zip or txt)
  • Only option is for Adminstrator to delete the file via the Admin CP's Manage Attachments section as not accessible from anywhere.

This has happened a number of times - on two different servers that the forum has been on.

In addition to getting a reply and suggestion from the makers of InstantForum, if anyone else has experienced this and determined the circumstances where this occurs, or how to fix, I would greatly appreciate it.

It appears this issue was also posted on the Bug Report http://support.instantasp.co.uk/Topic11611-37-1.aspx last posting - but with no reply or fix from InstantForum people?

Hi Joyce,

I just wanted to confirm we have posted a fix for this issue...

http://kb.instantasp.co.uk/Knowledgebase/Subquery-returned-more-than-1-value-when-trying-to-access-private-message-attachments
