I have some basic questions to ask before I purchase

1) when you say "100% code-behind"... does that mean I get all the source code?  Or just the code behind pages.  I'm fairly new to .net development, so I appologize if that's a dumb question.

Would I get the source code for the $119 end user license or the $299 Developer License?  (I think I know the answer but I thought I'd ask anyway)

2) You say it's compatible with VS.net... I have VS.net 2003.  Still good?

3) How much control do I have over the 'look' of it?  Page back ground colors, header font colors, message box background/text colors, header graphics (the banner at the top)

Can I change the graphics used for the "New Post" or "Reply" buttons?

Can I change the graphic for "new" or "unread" post icon?

I wouldn't necessarily need source code if I can tweak the look of it.
(although source code would be cool since I'm trying to learn C#/ASP.net anyway... looking at how someone else did something is a good way to learn).

I got "Community Server" from my ISP but I'm looking for a more serious forum.  Since my ISP installed it for me, I don't have access to many of the features I've mentioned above.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Hello MtnMike,

I hope I can help (I'm not associated with InstantASP)

1) You will receive the entire VB.NET project (in its entirety) with the Developer License

2) I use VS.net 2003... works great

3) The v4.0 forum is completly skinnable... All of the things you have listed can be changed by creating unique skins (colors, buttons, etc...). You can even have multiple skins to choose from. You can check out my current skin @ http://www.livingformetal.com/forum (not a heavily used forum, yet)

4) The project is developed in VB.NET

If you have any further questions (or if these words didn't help) please feel free to ask

You can play with the demo of the upcoming v4.0 of this forum... and even have Admin access... at the following url : http://demos.instantasp.co.uk/instantforum40

Thank you for the reply.

New questions:

Has anyone installed this at GoDaddy.com?
Will I need access to the 'master' database in MSSQL?

I ask because I tried to install CommunityServer and it's install scripts tries to execute stored procedures in the master database.  It's a shared server I'm on, and I don't have visible access to the 'master' database, just to my little 1 DBnnnn they give you.

Thanks,

Mike

You do not need access to the Master database. I also have shared web server and shared sql server. I only have access to my one little db???? database as well... It all worked wonderfully..

Although, I don't install the software on my actual shared webserver / sql server.. I install the product on my local machines... and then when the time is right... I DTS the tables & stored procedures to my databaes and ftp the project files to the appropriate web application folder on my web server.

Thanks again Bare.  Now all I need to do is wait for 4.0's official release.

(Btw, I checked out your metal forum, nice.)

Also, all the tables and stored procedures are named with a instant forum prefix (naming convention)... so, they should not conflict with your existing tables and stored procedures...

Yep... we're all waiting as patiently as possible for the official release

I just bought the v3.4 version - I have to patience.

Installed on my PC.  Now off to install on the webhost.
