Where can I find Instant KB 1.3 to 2 upgrade instructions?

iis6 and MSI installation to wrong website

I have donloaded and ran the MSI installer. However during installation the software decided to associate itself with a previously defined website. Our server hosts several different sites using IIS, I assumed we would be able to choose and assign the software to a site of our choice and not have it automatically associate itself with a random website on our server.

This meant that all of the files for InstantKB were installed to the wrong directory, and I decided to stop the automatic DB installation for fear of DB setup also being placed in the wrong place.

I have now removed the InstantKB installation using the Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs feature. However when checking the Application Pool in IIS I can see an application called 'InstantKB.NET v1.3 End User Lisence' is still associated with the original(wrong) site, i cannot remove it, i have even tried re-starting the server.

I would like to know 2 things,
1) Why did it install to the wrong place automatically? How do i choose the correct pre-defined website during installation?
2) How do i completely remove/unassociate the Application in my IIS > Application Pool?

I just upgraded to v1.3 from 1.2 and now when I try to navigate the messages, I get an error.

Fresh Install - Access Denied error

I am new to ASP.net. I have just purchased and installed InstantKB.Net on my W2003 server. Due to security reasons, the "Everyone" account has been removed from the security settings on the hard drives, and all security is explicitly created. The InstantKB.Net site is installed in a directory on the hard drive at c:\PCAShared\zHelpWebSite\KB.

As I try to access the site, I get "Server Error in "/KB" Application.. Access denied to "c:\PCAShared". Failed to start monitoring file changes.

Currently, the IUSR account, Network service, and ASP.Net account have full rights to the KB folder which leave me a little worried for hacker reasons.

What do I need to do? any help is appreciated.

My local box has VS2003 and VS2005 installed. I need to modify my KB App. I am opening the local version with VS2003. When I try and debug it throughs loads of build errors:

Does this have anything to do with me running VS2003 and VS2005 on the same box or am I just being retarded???

When I am trying to set up the DB I am getting errors when I run the fresh install. One of the errors is for the Stored Procedure GetArticles.

Msg 209, Level 16, State 1, Procedure ikb_sp_GetArticles, Line 10

Installing KB on site with SSL

We just added an SSL certificate to part of our website. Now, my KB running on that site is giving me an "invalid domain license" message. Do I have to buy another license? This KB is in the same domain that I purchased the KB license for, just in a secure directory.

Please help, I am extremely frustrated that I can't get an answer to this seemingly simple question.

Trouble with IIS6, DNS & InstantKB

I'm trying to move our current running version of InstantKB from an old IBM desktop running an ancient version of IIS to our new Windows 2003 Server running AD and DNS. I managed to move everything over fine, but the trouble starts when I try and actually access Instant KB.

[B]Cliff Notes:[/B]
- Set up IIS site on our DNS and AD Server
- Can access the site via [url]http://localhost[/url]
- unable to access the site via [url]http://triackb1[/url], on any system [b]except for[/b] the server
- DNS is not set-up correctly?

I've enabled IIS6 on the server (which is also the AD and DNS server) and created a new site, and ASP is running correctly, etc.

- When I try and access the KB via [url]http://localhost[/url], on the server, the KB loads up fine.
- When I type in [url]http://192.168.1.111[/url] (the servers IP), I'm dumped to the KB's error page, which is also correct. The FQDN we are licensed to is: [url]http://triackb1[/url])
- When I type in [url]http://triackb1[/url], on any workstations in our network, I get dumped to a "The page cannot be diplayed" page. why?

I think the problem is with the way I have the DNS set-up (or not set-up) - All the workstations are pointing to the server as the primary DNS, so I don't know what the problem is.

Any help would greatly be appreciated, as I'm a bit lost - more details can be provided details upon request.

Unable to add/update articles

Following error is displayed when I attempt to add new article or update new article. I moved from one server to another and I restored all databases. The site is working fine however. I can read articles.

Error Message: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'QuestionID', table 'DATABASENAME.DATABASEUSERNAME.InstantKB_Articles'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'QuestionID', table ' DATABASENAME.DATABASEUSERNAME.InstantKB_ArticlesTreeNodes'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. I am running InstantKB with SQL Server 2005. Is it an issue? Will the product works with SQL 2005. Please clarify.

Can you provide any idea as to how to fix this error?

Need step-by-step for setting up InstantKB on ISP

I read the "InstantKB.Net ReadMe.txt" file.

Your documentation states "For step by step installation instructions and information on each web.config application settings please refer to..."

I have run the 2 included scripts, I found on the forum to set the folder to "application".

I purchased the InstantKB product, unzipped and read the "InstantKB.NET ReadMe.txt" file. I connected to the remote server, ran the 2 SQL scripts, I modified the database connection string in the "InstantKB.config" file, and it states that "Once you have completed the installation wizard and set-up the database either via the installer or manually you should now see an empty knowledge base framework. A browser instance will have been launched during installation along with this readme.txt document."

I have not located the "installation wizard", which executable is that?

The only executable file I found was "Install.Helper.exe" and it states that it is a tool to assist with the installation, but that’s it.

NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

I installed IKB on W2k3 server and setup Db with ASPNET user but get this error:

Looks like the system tries to login into DB using NETWORK SERVICE instead of ASPNET.

Help Required - Unable to add articles

I uploaded all the files (InstantKB .NET) and SQL Scripts to the server but unfortunately I'm unable to add/edit/manage articles. When I click Create New Article link from the admin section, I'm getting the following error message

An unexpected error occurred within the application. If your the administrator of this site please contact InstantASP Ltd and provide your "ExceptionLog.config" file to assist with determining the cause of this problem. You can click here to go back to the knowledge base home page.

When I view the ExceptionLog.config file, I'm unable to see any data on it. It is empty. I'm unable to determine the cause of this problem. All other things are functioning properly except the add/manage article thing.

Install - Changing SQL connection string

I do not want to use the default connection string. I want to add a user and password to connect to the database. Is it as easy as changing the connection string in the web.config file?

IIS Folder Permissions

I initially gave "Network Service" and "IUSR_<server>" read-only access to all folders from my root InstantKB folder down and have found by trial and error a number of folders which require granting Network Service write access. I have looked but can't find any documentation regarding folder permissions. Please let me know what the appropriate permissions are for the InstantKB folder structure.

Installing on Windows 2000

When installing on Windows 2000 Advanced Server I get the following screen when I go to the default.aspx

When trying to do an artical serch from the admin login, I receive this error. As far as I know nothing has changed on the system and it used to work ok. All other functions appear ok. Below is the latest contents of the exceptions.config file which the error says to send to support to debug this.

Unable to Install ISS

hI guyz, For some reasons I am unable to install IIS on Windows XP, I have Windows XP cd handy, but the system keeps on looking for a file that doesn't exist on the cd, not sure what the problem might be, please assist in this regard.

When browsing to the new location the url constantly picks up the port location resulting in 404 messages, ie http://testhost:86

Can InstantKB be run outsite of port 80?

Error connecting after installation

Hello, I have recently installed InstantKB.Net onto a Win 2003 Server, I selected the default installation and ran the scripts to create the SQL Server DB locally, the IIS site was created, but when it tries to load the web page (after installation) an error comes up:

http://localhost/InstantKB13

Cannot connect to the configuration database.

I have added the ASPNET user as a DB owner of the SQL DB InstantKB13, and given it full permissions to the appropriate files as described in the documentation. The InstantKB.config hasn't been changed, it still reads:

server=localhost;trusted_connection=true;database=instantkb13

Is there a way to change the attachment location to a different drive? We will be installing on a existing machine that has a small C Drive and would like our attachments to go to the D Drive.

Installing on IIS 6 with W2K3

For some reason unknown to us, we are able to install the product on Windows XP Pro but unable to install it on W2K3, Web Server Edition.

We started with W2K3 and we get a page not found error when trying to access the site. After numerous attempt, like giving access to NETWORK SERVICE on the folders that are needed and changing permissions, it never worked. So we tried on WinXP Pro and worked like a piece of cake.

Any idea about what we are doing wrong?

I configured everything on my test servers to make sure I understood how everything worked. Everything worked like a champ right after a little tweaking of the security.

I then copied it out to our production server. I set the web.config file to use impersonation and I used the aspnet_setreg utility to place the encrypted username and password in the registry. Everything worked like a charm to a point.

It seems like the admin pages do not work properly. I can login with the admin user but when I select an administrator to edit, I get the error listed below. The test server displays the user /editadministrator.aspx without the error.

SIDE NOTE: The only way to actual see the error is by viewing the pages on the server via localhost. When viewed via our true URL, an error page is displayed that says to check the "ExceptionLog.config" file. This file does not exist in the logging folder.

Steps to install InstantKB on my ISP's server

Hi,

Do you have any details on the steps I need to go through in order to deploy my KB on my ISP's server.

I have set up my database with the ISP, and I have got my http://localhost/instantkb13 to point to the database.

I have created the desired folder on my website and I have copied the InstantKB files into it. I have asked my ISP to mark this folder as an application (but I have not had confirmation that this has happened).

I have uploaded the production license.config file

Is there anything else I need to do? (update other config files etc.)

This install is using a remote SQL server, I've confirmed the connection string is correct and that the two SQL scripts executed properly (the database, tables, and initial data all appear to be present), but I can't seem to get it to work properly. Anyone have any ideas?

Mail problems

For some reason, using the localhost option in web.config to use the internal SMTP server didn't work properly, so a few people that registered never got their confirmation emails. Two problems:

1. Is there logging information available anywhere that would be useful in solving mail related problems?

2. I temporarily fixed the problem by pointing the software to another server - is there a way to force a resend of the confirmation email from the admin section? If not, there should be a way to do that. Mail can fail for a number of reasons, including issues on the client side.

Windows Integration Authentication instead of Forms Authentication

We're looking into implementing InstantKB.NET for internal purposes only. I'd hate to put my users through another authentication layer. Is InstantKB.NET in the end user license capable of handling Windows Integrated Authentication instead of Forms Authentication (I know ASP.NET does)?

IIS6 Server 2003 Installation Instructions

Unfortunately installation prerequisite instructions do not appear until after one has attempted to install the product..

I am receiving a failed to connect to server error during my install.

I am running MSDE 2000a on Server 2003 with IIS6. The MSDE is using windows authority to authenticate. The sa account does not have a blank password.

My MSDE sql is running fine.

I see in the readme and user group’s bits about giving permissions to network service account and the db but no specific instructions on how to do that?

Do you have these instructions on available?

Instaling in a child virtual directory

I'm trying to install InstantKB.NET in a child virtual directory of my web application. The InstantKB.NET child subdirectory is configured to be an application in IIS. I am using Rainbow Portal as the root application of my web site. I.e.:

http://localhost/website points to Rainbow Portal.

http://localhost/website/kb points to InstantKB.NET.

When I try to access the knowledge base, I'm getting the error shown below. Have you dealth with this type of configuration before where the parent web application uses HTTP modules? Any suggestions on how I can get around this? I'm coming up blank.
