Is Staf Member = Yes causes a registration error

If 'Yes' members within this group will have access to the Staff CP.

You cannot register with that set to yes.. If I add the user to the Moderator/Staff Member group manually it works fine.

There is a permission set for the Registered member group and the Staff Member group... so its a bug or did I miss a configuration step?

Error Message: Operator is not valid for type 'DBNull' and string "0".

Anyone know what to do about the above error or had it before?

It occurs when logged in as an admin and you click "manage articles" and hit the go button to retrieve the last few new ones.

Query Article Count of all subarticles

We have been customizing InstantKB to fit our needs, and the one area where we could use a little help is writing a query that will return the article count of a category and all subcategories. Currently we have written a recursive routine which loops through all articles of the parent and child categories for a count. However for articles that appear in multiple categories are counted twice. I'm not sure the current database structure is really setup for this type of heirarchy, but is there a SQL Query you can supply us to count all articles including those in subcategories?

When I'm creating articles for the company I work for sometimes I can save articles but after a while I get the following message:

"An unexpected error occured within the application. If your the administrator of this site please contact InstantISP ltd and provide your ExceptionLog.config" file to assist with determining the cause of this problem. You can click here to go back to the knowledge base home page.

Error Meassage: Thread was being aborted.

Aparently the config file isn't there and the guy who runs the knowledge base is clueless and overworked hence me asking here. Unfortumately I'm unsure what version we have.

P.S The above error message is not a typing error it really does say your the administrator not YOU'RE!

We are currently developing our new support site with Sharepoint 2007 and wanted to see if we could setup InstantKB and InstantForums as a sharepoint site without sending the user to a different site or having them create a new account for these web apps. Configuration error

I am currently have problems with the error message below, taking over my entire knowledge base. It usually takes over the knowledge base for a couple of hours, then goes back to normal. I can't pin-point what is causing it, because it seems to do it for no reason.

Configuration Error!

The required application setting InstantKB_ShowAdminTab cannot be found within the InstantKB.config configuration file.

This setting must exist in the following format:

<InstantKB> <ConfigValues> <Name>InstantKB_ShowAdminTab</Name> <Value>[REQUIRES VALUE HERE]</Value> </ConfigValues></InstantKB>

As for the InstantKB_ShowAdminTab, a value is entered into the InstantKB.config file and that has never been changed either.

Has anyone else come across this error? I haven't been able to find anything else on the forum.

Search Result Highlighting Problem

When a user brings up a page as a result of a search, the search word or words are automatically highlighted. For the most part, this is a good thing. However, should that word (or words) be an actual part of a URL within the KB article, the URL itself is mangled with the highlighting code.

Is InstantKB.NET Dead?

I see some old posts about releasing a "new" version by September 2005. Now we are almost midway through September 2006 and still nothing.

The lack of ASP.NET 2.0 support is not grave (although it is annoying); more importantly, there are lots of small pent-up bugs and wish-list items and also general desire to have more features and see this product move forward.

Question: Is there a future for this product? How about a realistic answer? If we have to migrate to a different vendor/different product, I need to start planning for that and I certainly would prefer not to abandon InstantKB, but OTOH can't wait forever and there's been no guidance here at all to help shape our decision.

SQL Error when creating the database

With all the fuss recently with regards to the latest forum release many of you may be mistaken for thinking we've forgot about InstantKB.NET. This is simply not true. I've provided below some brief information below containing release dates and expected features.

I'll continue to revise this topic once things become a little more concrete.

InstantKB.NET v2.0

We cannot guarantee all features will make it into the v2.0 release. We will do our very best.

- Localization, Data Caching, URLRewriting, Scheduled Tasks
- Administrator Permissions (Choose who can access which admin features)
- Support for searching article attachments using full-text search
- Ability to define article approval work-flows & escalation paths
- Ability for email's sent to support@yourcompany.com, to be automatically detected and added to the knowledge base
- Ability to direct submitted questions to specific administrators based on category or keywords that appear within question

These are the key features that we are hoping will be included. Many other small improvements & customer requests will be added.

How do I login as "Admin"?

I just finished installing the InstantKB. Everything seems to be working but I don't know how to login as "Admin" to customize the KB. Is there a hidden admin username and password I can use? The InstantKB_Users table is empty right now.

Manasge Articles search not working

I just installed InstantKB.NET, and I can't seem to use the "Manage Articles" function.

Within the Admin system, I'm clicking "Manage Articles" in the left-hand menu. When I use the search form on the page http://domain/admin/update.aspx no results are found. I've tried multiple search terms, and various options in the drop-down menus.

When I click the Go button at the bottom of the form, the page is refreshed, and the search field(s) are cleared.

Edit Existing Article?

I'm having trouble editing any existing topic within InstantKB.NET.

The documentation you have in your knowledge base doesn't seem accurate. The editing screen capture doesn't appear anywhere I can find it.

I'm logging in as an Admin, selecting an article, and then I click on the Edit Article icon in the top-right corner (pencil icon). However, the link just refreshes the page. It appears that the hyperlink for the Edit Article icon is the exact page I'm actually on, such as http://domain/article.aspx?id=10000.

I'd think the link would go to something like http://domain/article.aspx?id=10000&edit=yes or http://domain/article_edit.aspx?id=10000 or something.

Help! I'm stuck.

Rich Textbox not behaving

I'm adding a couple new pages to create/edit article templates, and one of my pages involves loading the page with RTB hidden, then when the user selects a template to load I show the RTB and load the contents of the template into it. Or so I thought. The html gets loaded into the RTB, I can see it in the rendered html, but the RTB is empty and does not accept any input. now, If I load the page and don't hide the RTB, it works fine. This is obviously a bug somewhere in the RTB, and not my code. Please advise...

Opening InstantKB web page

Hi.

During some testing work I recently pointed my local version of InstantKB to a restored database of our live KnowledgeBase. Initially when I tried to open it (http://localhost/instantkb13) I recieved an error telling me that login had failed for my machine. I was able to correct this by adding my machine name\ASPNET to the users table in the database, and all was well until today, where I am recieving the same message.

I have recently backed all my databases up and reinstalled SQL server, but still have access to the database, and my existing passwords continue to work.

Would you have any ideas why this might be happening?

I have looked through the exceptionlog.config, but it does not point to any specific errors.

I am new to InstantKB and have a question regarding attachments. Is that a way to add an attachments to an article that is already uploaded to the attchement directory in InstantKB?

I have several articles for which I have created flash training tutorials. I need to share the same attachment with more that one article and I do not wish to upload the attachment more that once if there is any way around it.

Hi,

we are currently filling our knowledgebase and come across two issues:

1) when clicking on the categrory tree, retreiving of the node is rather slow. It takes I while before the tree is expanded. Is it possible to speed this up ?

2) when clicking on some of the categroies, we get an error message about an exception. It says the error description can be found in the 'exceptionlog.config', but it isn't updated with that error.

Hi, I am currently working on adding articles to our Knowledge Base using a piece of third party software, and need to work out what values to enter for the Skill level and the Suggested flag.

I have already worked out that a skill level of 0 relates to "No skill level specifed", so would a value of 1 equate to "Beginner", 2 to "novice" etc?

Also, what does the suggested flag actually relate to? With a value of 0 it still publishes the "Suggested by" name, can it just always be set to 0, or does it need to change if there is an email address included too?

We bought InstantKB 1.3 and we've been running it on a client site since 2004. The search functionality has been working fine... until now... when searching we get the following error "Cannot sort a row of size 8200, which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8094"

Are there any selected columns that can be removed from the ikb_Search stored procedure (to make the rows smaller)
OR can some of the columns be truncated
OR should we start using the Full Text Search
OR ????

Performance issues

I have a production environment of InstantKB that has approx. 300 users, 6700 articles and over 350 Categories. As I have added Categories, browsing performance has become worse and worse. Search, which we Index every night, is great, but I cannot roll out a Public instance to our end-users if Browse takes between 8-28 seconds to go from one topic to the next. As I add Categories, this gets worse and worse.

Is there a way to improve the Browse performance OR hide the Browse tab as I have done for Admin and Login in this anonymous instance?

Instant KB hangs when I try to save changes

When I edit an article and modify the Title, InstantKB hangs: Internet Explorer keep waiting for response and finally the page dont load. I dont remember if it only occurs when the Article Title is modified or with another one too.

It could be happends due the size of the title, because my current title is:

and when I add a T en the 4th word (insertar), the article is not updated and the page dont load

InstantKB on case sensitve Sql Server - Error, Error and more errors !!!

Hello,

I've an Sql Server 2000 with Collation "Latin_1_General_CS_AS".
If I install to a case sensitive DB then nothing works. if I install to a case insensitve DB system stored procedure will not found and
access to tempdb doesn't work.

An installation on Sql Server 2005 fails completely.

I've attached the logfile.

Why you can not develop on Case Sensitve Systems? Then this problems doesn't exist. Testing you your Software? :(

When will it be fixed?

Login errors caused by User-Roles

I am attacking a word doc with the errors I received based on being in multiple groups, and as i backed ot of groups, the error changed, until I went back to my original set of groups, at which point things were fine.

I did not have these problems before, nor with these groups. I can create a new user and login if that user belongs to a small number of groups, but being a member of multiple groups over a certain number seems to cause errors.

Articles within authorised categories

I have just been testing my knowledge base to see if an unauthorised user (Public) can access an article within an authorised user-role (Internal).

I did this by trying to access the URL of an article, which requires authorisation, which resulted in the knowledge base directing back to it's main page.

Is there anyway that the user can be re-directed to a log-in page instead of the main page?

Changing styles using style.css

I have just started to modify the look and feel of my knowledge base and I now have certain parts of the design i.e. changing the colours, which I would like to change, but I'm not sure which part of the style sheet corresponds to different areas. I have also attempted to change the colour to various different parts, but after updating, I haven't been able to see a visible change.

- I have been trying to change the colour of the blue text, which displays on the 'Answer Questions!', 'Manage Users' , 'Manage User Roles' and 'Manage Administrators' pages within the Administrator panel. This is the text, which displays, for example, 'Page 1 of 1 - 1 question found'.

- I would like to change the colour of the sepatators between the Most popular articles and latest additions on the main knowledge base page. These colour separators also appear on the page of search results.

- I would also like to change, if possible, the colour of the link which is in use, on the main navigation bar. i.e. 'Ask A Question!'. I would like to alternate the colours in use on the nav bar, with the text colour of the bar in use being the background colour of the other bars and the background colour of the bar in use being the text colour of the other bars.

If it is confusing at all, I can create some screen caps.

Managing user roles and managing admins

Just installed the InstantKB today. I added two new admins and wanted to edit the default admin account. I am loged in as admin and when I click on the "edit admin" button next to the username, the page refreshed, but I do not get a screen to edit the user. The same thing is also happening when trying to edit user roles. I click the button and nothing happens.

I went throught the online knowledgebase and this support forum but did not find any information on this topic. Your help is appreciated.

KB 2.0 Challenge

I've been following these forums about once a month since I purchased InstantKB and InstantForum last September. Both products were superior to anything else I've seen in their class. We've spent many hours since then transferring our KB to InstantKB but sorely need some of the features advertised for 2.0.

I've been in IT for 20 years and have never seen anything like what has happened to InstantASP regarding customer support and customer relations. From my perspective, it seems as though InstantASP has systematically tried to alienate it's customer base. Correction, I've never seen this in a company that wasn't months or weeks away from ceasing to exist. Nonetheless, Ryan and Carlos insist that InstantASP is committed to their products and are actively developing them. Others have said this, but if Ryan thinks that with the next release everything will be solved he is sorely mistaken. Were I a prospective customer looking at purchasing InstantASP products now, a couple of minutes in these forums would send me looking elsewhere no matter how much I liked the product.

InstantASP needs to start repairing customer relationships now, months before the next release. How? Stop the BS posts that we all know are a joke and do nothing but insult our intelligence and further alienate us. Instead, start communicating with us on a regular basis about the real progress of the projects you are working on. A short once per week post--preferably from Ryan--talking in broad terms about what is being worked on along with an updated release date would go a long way toward restoring customer loyalty and confidence. Sure, it's unusual for a developer to give such weekly updates, but given our patience and InstantASP's broken promises I think we deserve nothing less. Again, if you don't start winning back customer confidence now, then I think you're wasting your time working on future releases because they will be DOA as we'll all be looking to go elsewhere.

All that said, my users like InstantKB and my staff has invested a lot of time in developing InstantKB KB articles so I'm not ready to jump ship just yet. Furthermore, unless there is something drastically wrong (e.g. Ryan is incarcerated ;)), whatever the real problems are at InstantASP they can probably be solved by throwing more resources at them. Which brings me to my final point and challenge...

I think InstantKB is under priced. I may be wrong, but the single server, single domain license option is probably enough for most customers and yet even with a year of support it is priced under $300. How can you run a company on this? A few support incidents quickly make this a losing proposition not even taking into account other costs such as development!

Here's my challenge and proposal. My staff's time that is invested in InstantKB is worth far more than I paid for the product and I don't want to throw it away. If you can deliver Instant KB 2.0 by November 1, 2006 I'll purchase an upgrade to unlimited-servers, unlimited-domains AND one year of support at this level. If you don't, I'll simply maintain my single server, single domain installation until I can find a product to which I can migrate our KB articles.

I encourage others to publicly or privately challenge InstantASP to deliver with a promise to purchase if they do deliver and a promise to look elsewhere if they don't. My (vain?) hope is that given a commitment of new revenue contingent upon the delivery of InstantKB 2.0, InstantASP might devote more resources (e.g. hire some contract programmers) toward speeding development.

My client receives the following message:

Error Message: Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

I am including the ExceptionLog as an attachment.
