You're quite right Charles, Plesk if not absolutely correctly configured can cause problems for all kinds of ASP.net apps, the main problem is the way Plesk handles the IIS Worker Pools and the IUSR accounts for each application. I would reccomend (if your plesk install supports this) to run InstantASP applications in their own dedicated app pool, with a nightly pool recycle scheduled in the application pool settings directly in IIS on that pool. This is not ideal, but less clunky than modifying files to keep things running.

Incidentally Plesk issues are amplified if the server is a Virtuozzo VPS.

Hi Jaaboo,
This error "can" occur if the virtual directory/application you are hosting the software in is not correctly configured for security, OR experiences an application pool problem/error, in such cases the ASPNET/Network Service accounts may try to perform extra operations to resolve the issue without crash/error, if they do not have the permissions required then the error you are seeing is displayed. I would check through your IIS Setup for the application RE: Security, Re-Apply all filesystem permissions, and extend the ASPNET/Network Service account's permissions, and then test to see if this improves things.

If not, if you wouldnt mind either opening a support ticket, or emailing Support@InstantASP.co.uk, we'll do whatever we can to resolve the issue.

A bit of thread necromancy here, but we also have this problem on our installation of InstantKB. The permissions are correct and the system works, but it will at random times revert to the error above. An iisreset will get the system to work again, but I'd like to find a way to completely eliminate these errors.

I have added all of the permissions, but the error has appeared within the knowledge base again.

The user that is running on my machine is NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE.

I will post all of my users, to ensure that my permissions are correct:

Administrators: full control, modify, read & execute, list folder contents, read, write
System: full control, modify, read & execute, list folder contents, read, write
IIS_WPG: read & execute, list folder contents, read
Internet Guest Account: read & execute, list folder contents, read. Deny: write, special permissions
Network Service: modify, read & execute, list folder contents, read, write
Users: read & execute, list folder contents, write.

To enable virtual directory, is the setting within Properties --> Directory Security --> Authentication and access control (select 'Edit...') then check the Enable anonymous access checkbox? If so, it is selected.

My knowledge base is now working again, but I'm not sure if my changes have made it work. I don't want to risk the error appearing when the knowledge base goes live.

Dear Gemmal,

The anonymous internet user account (usually named IUSR_MachineName, where MachineName is the name of the computer you are hosting the application on) needs to have read, read & execute, and list folder contents permissions on the root folder and all items within.
You must also have the virtual directory configured to allow anonymous access in IIS.
The ASP.NET worker process account (usually ASPNET or Network Service) need to have the same permissions as the anonymous internet user account.
It should also have Modify permission to the Attachments folder.
I've attached a test page to this post. Please place it in your InstantKB application folder and visit it using your browser. It will tell you what windows user your application is impersonating. That windows user will need the permissions I have described in a previous post to this ticket.

My knowledge base has been taken over by the configuration error again, so I have been looking through my user permission settings.

The only user, which doesn't have read permissions in the Internet Guest Account. Do I have to grant read permissions to this user?

The required application setting InstantKB_ShowAdminTab cannot be found within the InstantKB.config configuration file.

This setting must exist in the following format:

Dear Gemma,

We've already seen this problem when the ASPNET user did not have read permission to the InstantKB.config. In this case, granting ASPNET (or whatever windows user your application is using) read permission will fix the problem.

Another possibility that we've seen is that the InstantKB.config is not in the application root folder or its structure is not invalid.
