Home page modification

Can i modify the home page of the forum to include a list of topics from a particular forum, like i have a news forum and i want to create a little box at the top, split between say on the left a login box with some into text and on the right the box with list of new artcles from a specific forum.

Is there a plugin or way to do this easily without writing it myself?

I'm new to InstantForum.NET, but am familiar with vBulletin.

Is it possible to configure Auto-Subscribe to a thread to which someone posts, with option to allow user to turn off feature if they don't like it?

Is it possible to configure Auto-Subscribe to a thread to which someone views the thread, with option to allow user to turn off feature if they don't like it?

Further, is it possible to configure so that a subscription only emails someone on the next post/reply but not subsequent ones *except* when they return to view the thread the will get another email on the next post/reply.

These are features of vBulletin, and I find them extremely important for building traffic and making a forum "stickier" but w/o inundating the user with too much email for hot threads?

I have put several mime types into the web.config file, but still can not get it working. Does anyone know what the correct mime type is for .ZIP files that I should put into the web.config file? Or any other way to upload/attach .ZIP files.

Image MIME type Oddness!

Hey, I released a new version of my website recently which involved over-writing all the forum files (bar attachments folder) and since then some members can attach forum posts and upload avatars, and others receive an 'incorrect mime type' error message. I'm one of the ones that can upload.

This seems a bit odd to me, that some can and some can't upload. I've checked the web.config and the allowed mime types are as they were before the deployment. I thought perhaps it was permissions after then on the attachments folder but they're as expected. I tried resetting them as well.

Some affected folks have tried IE7 and then FF, but to no avail.

Any clues? Please don't suggest upgrading to 4.x as we've got that planned to happen soon but I need this fixed now.

When i open the project i get 103 errors about some controls are is not a member of 'InstantForum'.

Wrong domain in links

I had been getting complaints for a while that the 'Not A Registered Forum' would come up occassionally.

Finally run into it myself.

Occassionally a link becomes ww.DisneyMouseLinks.com instead of www.DisneyMouseLinks.com

Any link you click after that point does the same thing.

Anyone know what's going on?

Cannot open project in VS2003

My name is Yan and currently I am working with Prisco on integrating your software (InstantForum 3.4) into Prisco's new intranet.

I am having difficulty opening the project in VS2003 (VB.NET). When I open the project I get 103 erros about some controls are is not a member of 'InstantForum'.

For example 'CookieUtil' is not a member of 'InstantForum'.
I believe it is to the cause of absent reference (InstantForumComponents). Under references this control has an yellow exclamation sign.

I reinstalled the software couple of times and didn't find anything in the online guide

Hi,

Just purchased this and the KB app today. Really happy with how smooth it installed. Actually had the IForum.NET live on my server a few minutes after I downloaded. Guys- This is supposed to be hard! So, kudos to you for a great product.

So, now I'm editing the .css (which is really well commented) to look more like my site. Which brings me to my question:

Do you have a list of the buttons and sizes, etc. that covers what needs to be made and named as to quickly assemble and replace these? I have a graphic designer that I want to pass this over to to create the buttons, so a nice inventory of these assets would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot access article about integrating login

I was searching the forums for information about how to integrate my website's login with InstantForum v3.4. I found an article at http://support.instantasp.co.uk/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=34&MessageID=2113, but I cannot access that article.

Does my account need additional permissions, such as entry in the Customer member group? I have purchased the InstantForum v3.4 about a month ago.

Forms in Wrappers

I am posting a forum onto a new e-commerce site and I would like to use the sites current header and footer in the forum but the footer has a couple of forms for product search and subscription to the monthly emails. I cannot seem to get the forms to work in the wrapper they post back to the same page and not to where they are directed. I just installed InstantForum just yesterday so it is entirely possible I am missing something here.

RESPONSE:

It looks like the forum may be to blame for this issue. I isolated the forum into its own application pool and have been roaming around on it for about an hour. Since I started, the forum application pool has consumed 81MB of physical memory.

I also received a report back from the server operations team about my queury for more information. They also believe that the .Net portion of the site (both the forum and the blog) is the cause of this problem. The leak appears to be very slow.

From reading through the support forum on the fourm vendor's site (instantasp.co.uk), it appears that v4.1.3 suffers from an array of performance related issues from high CPU use under moderate load to a huge memory foot print when more than 5 to 10 concurent users are browsing a forum. These issues look like they have been solved in a soon to be released update, version 4.1.4. But no one on the forum has any idea when this version will actually become available. The instantasp.co.uk developers looks like they frequently post in this forum, but are not commenting on the 4.1.4 release date.

Forum throwing an error. How to get details on it?

I am getting the following error:

"Sorry the application encountered an unexpected error. Information about this error has been logged. If you continue to receive this message please contact the board administrator."

Since I am the admin, where can I help myself here to find out the root cause? Is there a log file or table that is populated? This is a new board and we were just setting up the categories and forums when this just started to appear. Help please.

Issue with CSS in wrapper

The wrapper for my forums references a root style sheet. While the header and footer of the wrapper is formatted properly, the style appears to tweak the forum's classic skin a bit. I've tried to isolate the style to the wrapper code, but have not been successful. My experience with CSS is limited, so I could use a little guidance.

Isolate and display a single forum on a page

We are trying to integrate the forums capability of IF into an existing website. In one section of the site, we want the typical site-wide heirarchical forum drill-down. No problem. However, in other parts of the site, we want to associate a "private" forum with something like a member club -- if you're in the club you can get to a page that shows some club information, and below that the club forum.

I have managed to code up the club creation so that I create member groups for the club member and club admin, create the club forum, and make the current user (the club creator) a club member and admin for role-based access. Now I want to create the "show club" page which will show various club info (external to IF) and the club forum view.

How can I show just a single forum view on a page without getting there through the site's forum hierarchy? I want to be able to retrieve the forum ID from our own table (associated with the club object), and include a view of the that forum from within the club view page without throwing away the skinning/master page capability. Or do I have to write entirely custom code?!?!?

Migrating from PHPBB to InstantForum

Well after struggling with config issues on my SQL server (thanks slammer worm) and some script issues thanks to my popup blocker Im just about ready to migrate our 3000+ user database from PHPBB to InstantForum.

My problem now is that PHPBB encrypts all user passwords using a keyless MD5 hash while instantfourm stores all PWs as clear text in the DB.

Since MD5 encryption is one way, is there anyone out there that has added MD5 support to instantforum?

There are .Net classes that handle MD5 which I could integrate in if someone would point me in the right direction to add this in.

Honestly im hoping someone has already done this to save me the trouble ;-).

Hello all,

I've finally started moving my site to all .net due to its size and the fact that Ive finally gotten to the point in my coding career that .net is the way to go.

I have a very active forum that has survived a few years on the open source ASP Snitz Forum but it doesn't cut it anymore. Its too bulky, not .net, in line db calls and TONS of overhead db hits so its out... and in my quest to find its replacement I have come here.

I was wondering (hoping) to find someone who's migrated from a Snitz forum to this InstantForum.NET and get assurances that I wont be pulling out large chunks of hair and scalp to get it done.

Anyone? I appreciate any and all input.

Using the Rich Text Editor on Another Page

I am attempting to use the Rich Text Editor (i.e. the WYSIWYG control) on a new page within my .NET project. I have successfully added the control to my new page and it displays correctly and seems to function normally. However, I am unable to see any text that I assign to the Text property of the coltrol. For whatever reason, it does not appear in the iframe, but yet, if you view the HTML source for the page in IE, you can see that the Test attribute of the INPUT tag does in fact contain the text in question.

Has anyone else tried to do this? Any idea what I'm missing? Thanks in advance.

Problems Accessing Moderator CP and Admin CP

When I am logged in as Administrator and attempt to access Admin CP or Moderator CP, I get the following error message:

A error occurred processing your previous request. If you feel this is a genuine problem and the webmaster should be informed please contact Support@Thisisthenuts.com.

The forums are otherwise working fine. We did migrate our server a couple of months ago but the connection string for the database did not change. This is the first time I have accessed those control panels in quite a while.

And ideas?

Error message when selecting Post Reply to Topic

We are using Instant Forum 3.4 version.

We select a Forum, then the Topic. Then we click on the Topic Options | Post Reply to Topic. We get this error message.

Moderator email problems

Last week, our forum admin added 20 moderators to our forum. This had the effect of causing significant delays when new posts were made, as the software had to send 20 notification emails for each post. I told the admin that he should only assign one or two moderators to eliminate this problem. He then asked me a question I could not answer: what about subscribed members? If hundreds of forum members are subscribed, doesn't that mean that hundreds of emails are sent for each post? If so, do these emails get sent on the same thread as the post, or are they sent from a separate thread?

Error returned from FeedReader: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.:SmilingGoat.Syndication.

I can add any external feeder to this and get no errors but when I add the Forum or KB feeds I get errors. Could you please assist us.

Page display problems

When coming to the home page, I will search a topic. There will be multiple hits, more than what could be displayed on one page. I cannot click to a next page, I can see there are other pages to view but when I click on next, or click on an individual page to view, it always just displays the first page. So if I want to scroll through topics for just general looking I can't. I have to narrow down a search to exactly what I need so it displays the exact topic on the first page. If anyone could steer me in the right direction that would be appreciated, or let me know someone to contact that would be helpful.

Users Can Access Private Forums

We have created a specific group and put all our forums in that group. We then created a new member group. We have defined that the only access to the forums is through the new member group. The only way to be in that new group is to have an administrator add someone to it; therefore, we keep all forum access regulated and private.

However, if a registered forum member goes to the main dashboard they are able to access the private forums in the following manner:

1) From the home page of the forums (though the forums are not displayed), click either 'Recent Topic', 'Active Topics', and 'Popular Topics'.

2) Then the registered, but not approved, member can access forums they should otherwise not be able to access, and also reply to topics.

This is clearly not a good security model. How can this be fixed; this is VERY important to us.

Leveraging current user registration

Is there a way to leverage current site registration for InstantForums? We currently have a site that has its own user registration (for subscription purposes to a product) and would like to add a forum. We don't want users to have to reregister on the forum, so disabling all the "edit your profile" would be benefical without reducing forum functionality (and member messaging, etc).

Changing URLs in posts to leverage affiliate programs.

A lot of sites give you affiliate links, such as the all powerful eBay.

Its very common for people to link to eBay items in forum posts.

Do you have a way of generically looking for a URL type (e.g. a mask to identify that it is an eBay link) and then change the link so that it inserts the affiliate equivalent?

To the end user, there is no difference. However, if they go on to make a bid (or purchase in the case of online stores) the forum owner then gets a kick back as the affiliate link is used rather than a direct link.
