This version is fixed at Version 4.1.4 SP1, if you email me on: James@InstantASP.co.uk I will send you either the developer or end-user version (dependant on your licence) in zip/rar file format.

For future versions we will be looking at implementing the option to make use of a selection of editors, which admins will be able to select from the Control-Panel, whilst also continuing to develop our own editor to provide more functionality and cross browser compatibillity. The option to utilise FCKEditor should I expect, be available from version 4.2 forwards, although it is not yet a 'Confirmed' feature it is highly likely.

Hope this solves problems for all of you, and feel free to email me with any queries regarding this version or the implementation of FCKEditor within InstantForum.

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

Hi
Many thanks for your comments. I completely agree.

Although we do try to downgrade gracefully for other browsers things have moved on since we implemented the WYSIWYG editor and there is no reason we now can't provide the complete WYSIWYG experience on all major browsers.

We've moved in this direction with our forthcoming InstantKB.NET v2.0 release and indeed our next update for InstantForum.NET (due shortly after InstantKB.NET v2.0 expected beta very very soon) will feature a fully cross browser WYSIWYG editor. We'll also be providing the option to use several of the free WYSIWYG controls such as freetextbox, or fckeditor.

I appreciate the need to get something in place as your looking to go live and we'll look at preparing a post to show how to modify the current v4.1.4 code to work with either fckEditor or FreeTextBox editor ASAP.

I suspect a few will find this helpful till the next forum update. We'll keep this posted updated.

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

We finally launched our client's site with InstantForum and just now realized that the editor does not work with browsers other than IE? We have a large community of Firefox and Mac users. Our community of users are not technical. Many are sailors/boaters who will be sharing their cruising adventures and boat projects -- but no one can upload images unless they have IE!! This is a REAL problem. Also they're forced to use IFCode which adds another unnecessary level of complexity for them.

With many cross-browser and XHTML compliant editors out there this is the first instance I've seen where such a robust software lacks something so expected and basic. We're using version 4.1.4. I've spent several days customizing and configuring this product for our "non-profit" client. They don't have the funds or time to invest in launching a different forum product. Now what can we do?

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

Hi David,
Very soon. It's really been the InstantKB.NET v2.0 release holding us back. We've faced some tricky coding challenges and quite some feature creep. A small forum update will be available next week to resolve a few issues before v4.1.5 and a beta of InstantKB.NET v2.0 will be available later this month.

We've already started work on InstantForum.NET v4.1.5 a few months back and moved to .NET v2.0 / MasterPages etc. As the forum and knowledge base both now share the same framework InstantASP.Common and InstantASP.Common has been changing due to kb development it's been tricky to provide a solid forum update.

Things are now stabilizing within the common framework as InstantKB.NET v2.0 is nearing feature completion. This won't be an issue after the v2.0 and v4.1.5 release and you can expect many more frequent updates.

We'll also be able to reuse many of the classes and controls we've implemented within our common framework for forthcoming forum updates. For example custom fields for registration, posting within the forum or our new tagging system which will be sharable across current and future apps. We've also performed quite some work on general performance within the common framework (improving object collection, quicker xml/localization lookups and parsing) which will be visible within v4.1.5.

I do sincerely appreciate your support and patience David. Hopefully we can reward your support with some very nice updates very soon :)

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

The key question then is "when"?

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

Hi David,
Would be a pleasure. I've attached to this post the list of items we are addressing for the v4.1.4 interim hot-fix before v4.1.5. Unfortunately some of the line items on the list may not make much sense to you as you can't see the description for the item. This was just the best way to quickly show you the issues we are addressing for the hot-fix before v4.1.5.

For our v4.1.5 update there a number of important changes....

This will be our first version of the forum specifically for ASP.NET v2.0. This means a Visual Studio.NET 2005 solution by default along with other .NET v2.0 specific changes. For example we now use standard ASP.NET MasterPages (as opposed to implementing our own v1.1 work around).

With the move to .NET v2.0 in the v4.1.5 update this will also allow us to take advantage of the new Microsoft AJAX extensions. We've used this extensively in the forthcoming InstantKB.NET v2.0 update and have some great ideas how this could be applied to the forum.

Speaking of InstantKB.NET v2.0. InstantForum.NET v4.1.5 will have the ability to share users and roles with the knowledge base and visa-versa. We've already created a new common administrator interface for InstantKB.NET v2.0. We are hoping to move the forum towards this common admin interface. Basically the InstantASP applications you have currently installed will appear in tabs within the common admin interface. You can then use these tabs to visit the admin area for that application in a consistent manner. You can see an example of this below...

http://downloads.instantasp.co.uk/CommonAdmin.gif

With v4.1.5 i also want to change the way all data paging is performed. With ASP.NET V2.0 which found a much high performing approach which we've adopted for InstantKB.NET v2.0. This paging method will be ported over to the forum.

We've also done lots of work in InstantKB.NET v2.0 to move to 100% strict XHTML. We revised our InstantASP.Common suite of controls to ensure XHTML compliance. We will be doing work for the v4.1.5 update to move towards w3c compliant XHTML for all output. As part of this work we are also looking at improved section 508 compliance for v4.1.5.

I'll be trying to hold off on new features really David for the moment until we've resolved all known issues and the current code base is as bug free as possible. I want to spend the next few forum point releases focusing on quality and introducing small user suggested features.

We have lots of great ideas for new features (i have a very very long list) and i'm very keen to get started on the majority of ideals. Equally i'm keen to ensure the current code base is of a certain quality and will be working over the next few point releases on this before you see significant new UI features.

We are looking to update the forum editor for v4.1.5 or at minimum provide the option to use the FireFox compatible editor used within InstantKB.NET v2.0.

With regard to supporting the 3rd party WYSIWYG controls it's something i've been thinking about for a while. It's on the list and i completely agree it would be very nice to provide the option to switch between the current editor, the new kb editor, freetextbox, FCKEditor or any of the others already available. We'll be looking at this ASAP. I would also want to try and maintain our own editor as i'm not very keen on having to relay on a 3rd party to address issues that could affact our products. The option would be very nice though.

There are other minor issues like the Who's On list not clearing correctly sometimes. Hopefully we'll manage to resolve many of these minor items for the minor v4.1.4 hot fix leaving us to focus on the ,NET v2.0, standards and compatability work for v4.1.5. Of course should we learn of new issues along the way they'll be addressed ASAP.

I hope this helps a little David. I would welcome any suggestions you may have :)

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

Ryan - just a suggestion - why redevelop the wheel - why not use something like FCKEditor, which is a separate project and could just be drawn in and utilized within IF - I use this on other projects and would heartily recommend it

Can you let us know what is in the 4.14 update - what new features and what fixes ...

Can you let us know what is in the 4.15 update - what new features and what fixes ...

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

Hi DotNetWebs,

Hope your very well. I'm sorry to hear this is causing you problems. Unfortunately we don't have a fix as yet to provide complete WYSIWYG functionality within FireFox. This is something we are aware of and are working to provide an update. This will be addressed in our next v4.1.5 update.

If your still having problems with the forum or awaiting a fix for any issues and your ticket period has expired please send me a email on ryan@instantasp.co.uk with your My.InstantASP account email and i'll reset this right away. You can also prompt me via our Live Chat feature available on the web site at http://www.instantasp.co.uk.

The WYSIWYG editor currently within FireFox will offer limited functionality. We do make attempts to downgrade gracefully and users can still post and use IFCode to format messages. However being a FireFox user myself fully appreciate we need complete FireFox support.

As you may or may not be aware we are currently working on our InstantKB.NET v2.0 update and have invested significant time in ensuring InstantKB.NET v2.0 offers a full WYSIWYG experience within all popular browsers.

I've included links to some screen grabs below of our new InstantKB.NET v2.0 editor. As you can see this offers the same experience in FireFox as you would get in other browsers.

http://downloads.instantasp.co.uk/InstantKB20Editor1.gif
http://downloads.instantasp.co.uk/InstantKB20Editor2.gif

We are still working hard to make our InstantKB.NET v2.0 update available ASAP. The moment this is ready we will be porting the new WYSIWYG over to InstantForum.NET for the v4.1.5 update.

The v4.1.5 update will focus on moving the product completely towards ASP.NET v2.0 (master pages, sql cache dependency etc), integration with InstantKB.NET v2.0 *users & tolrd), the WYSIWYG editor (improved cross browser support) and general performance improvements and bug fixes.

We are currently working on a small update for InstantForum.NET v4.1.4 which will address a number of know issues. Unfortunately due to the work involved with porting the editor this issue will not be address in our hotfix. It will be addressed in v4.1.5 which you can expect this early Q2.

Sorry we can't offer an immediate fix for this issue. If you can just hold out a little longer i can assure you we will have full cross browser WYSIWYG support very soon. In the meantime please prompt me via email or live chat and we'll reset your support period. I'll also look at preparing a sample of InstantForum.NET using http://freetextbox.com/.

I hope this helps a little. Please be assured I do listen to all feedback posted within the community forums. I may not personally respond right away however we'll will always strive to implement great ideas and suggestions.

The WYSIWYG editor won't provide the same experience when viewed within gecko based browsers. It will default to using IFCode to format posts. It will still work within FireFox, Opera etc and allow users to format messages but with some limitations.

The editor will always attempt to downgrade gracefully for browsers that don't support the MSIE HTML Engine.

We've been working with InstantKB.NET v2.0 to ensure a true cross-browser WYSIWYG experience. We now have an editor that provides similar functionality in both IE and Gecko based browsers. This will be included within the next InstantKB.NET release and we will be looking to move this over to InstantForm.NET to offer the same cross-browser support for the WYSWYG control.

I hope this helps a little. We are aware of the current limitations with the editor within Gecko based browsers and it's something we will be improving upon with future releases.

If you need anything further or have any other suggestions please don't hesitate to respond.

RE: Rich Text Editor Does Not Work In Firefox

Ryan,
what's up?
