Just wondering if you are still having this issue.

If so would it be possible to get a copy of your skin.xml and language.xml files.

Hi All,

This is still under investigation for RC4. In the meantime you can disable the messages within InstantASP.InstantForum\Business\Skins.vb look for the private SelectSkins method and remove the code within the catch statement. Also for the language packs visit InstantASP.Common\Business\Languages.vb and look for the private SelectLanguage method again remove the code within the catch statement.

Tim / Cristiano could you let me know which OS and IIS version your running?

Would it be possible to RDP to your machines to investigate this problem?

If I could only be directed to the point where this error is produced, I would gladly just disable the reporting of this error as it causes no problem with the working of the forum. The error message itself however prevents us from being able to use it in a public test setting, as every other reported bug would be this gigantic error message.

Through all three RC releases, all of the users on my site have received error messages related to skin and language objects upon signin. With the release of RC3, the message has gotten much longer, and appears like this:

Problem with skin objects: The data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.Problem with language objects: The data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.

I do not have any custom skins at all and did a clean install of the files - I have checked all the database tables and settings, and everying is set to Classic/English, but these problems still persist. Any insight on how to finally get rid of this error would be greatly appreciated - this is an upgrade of a existing 3.4 forum.

When I go to "New Support Ticket", for some reason it says my support has expired, and I see no options to add a ticket.

I will open a ticket. Actually, we do have a version running on what I believe is a public webserver now. I've just been told our IP has been wide open to visitors for a while. I'll see what I can do about granting access.

We're running IIS6 and Windows 2k3 Server.

I tried to find where this error is generated but can't. Is there some way to disable it as it's not causing any forum problems for us other than the fact the error message is displaying? I'd like to install the RC3 version onto our public site, but can't as long as this message continues to appear.

Ok, this is going to sound really crazy... but I think I had to do this once for a similar problem... So, maybe you'd like to give it a shot???

1. AdminCP
2. Skins & Wrappers section
3. Manage Skins
4. "Edit Skin Details"
5. Insert the appropriate information
6. Click Submit (even if step 5 was not needed)

Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each skin..

This should re-write the skin.xml file.

I ran into something similar when I didn't use the AdminCP Manage Skins area to create a new skin... I had copied a skin folder into another skin folder at the operating system level.. This is a big no no with v4.0...

Give it a shot... It can't hurt...

Many thanks for your post.

This message will be presented if the forum has a problem reading the Skin.xml definition file within any skin directory.

Could you ensure the ASPNET account (Windows XP/2000) or NETWORKSERVICE account (Windows Server 2003) has at minimum read permission on any Skin.XML file within skin directories. Also you may wish to double check your skin.xml file and ensure it does not contain any reserved XML entities within element text.

If your not sure please attach your skin.xml here for review.

This is a genuine problem and I believe the error should be shown to indicate something is wrong.

For example take a look at the skin drop down list selection on the home page when logged in, if you receive this error the problem skin may not appear within the skin selection. I agree with regards to the exception message, this has now been enhanced to display more information with respect to the cause of the exception.

All skins do show in the skin drop down, even when I get this message. I just went and enabled the permissions you mentioned directly on the files in question and still the errors persist. I looked inside the file (especially the Language.xml which was short) and saw nothing at all that would be problematic.

Is there a way to disable this message entirely as it doesn't affect the function of the forum? Perhaps log it in the background so that it can be reviewed, but not have it display to the user?

Hi Cristiano,

Hope your well. With regards to the problem obtaining language objects this is similar to Tim's problem. Could you ensure the Language.xml definition file within each language folder has the correct permissions.

Also please ensure the Language.XML file does not contain any reserved XML entities within text. Again please attach your language.xml file here for review.

This exception message has been enhanced to provide further information if the application has a problem reading any of the Language.xml definition files within each language folder.

I experience the same problem, and have no custom skin - just the classic skin installed - I get the messages constantly about trouble obtaining language/skin objects. I am not sure what the cause is - I've not been able to get a definitive answer on it, but it's annoying to see it all the time.

Perhaps there is a problem in your custom skin somewhere. By finding where the snipit of code sends the message to the user, you may be able to find out what is causing the problem in your skin (that is if switching to the classic skin solves your problem). I definitely agree that by updating the original code as little as possible, you save yourself some headaches on future releases.

I haven't tried moving back to the custom skin. I can take a peek, but what's odd about it is that it doesn't actually effect anything, only displays the message. I'm tempted to just find the spot in their code where that happens, comment it out, and recompile. Would rather not though, I like keeping things as pristine and original as possible (which was a real snap this time around, it has most of the functionality I added to their previous version built in already).

We've implemented a completely custom skin, and haven't experienced any problems like that. I take it the problem is resolved when you switch back to the classic skin?
