I had forgotten all about this because we changed servers to an inhouse server (since 768 up and 5mb down is ok speedwise) and the issue went away.

Enough people have had the issue that it is probably some kind of timing issue that causes the forum to resend the email.

Alrighty. I'm thinking that this is a server issue. Noting the dates of this thread and versions listed, it's still an issue. I'm running v4.1.4 and just had the multiple issue. Typically I've seen 1-2 emails, but this time it was quite a bit more. I also noticed that it took quite a while to receive the email once I sent it. I'm guessing that IASP has been going over this since the initial reports, but has anything been solved for sure, or is it still unclear what the exact issue is?

It looked to me like there had been posts as late as 11/15.

I have 4.1.2. I think the problem has something to do with not choosing a Member Group to send the bulk email to. I've successfully sent bulk emails when I've chosen a member group.

One user just reported receiving 39 emails instead of 2.

I just had the same multiple email problem today. One person reported getting 19 emails. I only sent 2.

I gathered by reading this thread that the problem has not been fixed, but there is a new feature that will delete emails from the queue?

Thank goodness.

I installed the RC3 yesterday when your PM arrived,took anout 20 minutes and everything is working great. One thing - where's the link to the list of what you've done between RC2 and 3? Particularly interested in the search engines work.

Our new topics are being listed and found on Google within 24 hours right now.. Yahoo seems particularly pleased as well..

Hi Liam,

A new option exists within RC3 to delete emails from the queue once they have failed sending a certain number of times. This will ensure if they continue to fail they will be removed and will not continually send failure notices.

You can manage this threshold within the Email & RSS Settings page within the admin area.

Just for the sake of tracking down the issue. Do you have another mail server you can send from? Im thinking that if you set up a small group and then change the email server address to another server running the same or better still a different setup and it works, you might be able to narrow down if this issue is forum or mail server related.

My reasoning here is that there might be a chance that some behavior on the part of the mail server may cause a problem between the two.

I don't think so Liam, when email's are sent, successful email's are tracked and at the end of sending the successfully sent email's are deleted from the InstantASP_Emails table. Email's that had problems sending are not removed from the queue.

For example if .NET throw a "The server rejected one or more recipient addresses" exception for a specific email this email would not be removed from the InstantASP_Emails table, instead it will continue to attempt to send. A retry threshold will be available within RC3 to prevent mails from continually attempting to resend.

I'll continue to look at this Liam, would it be possible for you/me to temporary disable emails from your board, send the bulk messages and then review the mail queue, just to confirm you don't have any issues that could be adding these several times.

Could it be that the mails sent and then returned by remote mail servers are causing every other mail to be sent again too? What about if a single mail message cannot be sent the entire queue is sent again?

I tried again the next day. I sent a message to a small group of 15. It sent once, then again. I then selected and deleted everything in the queue before it went mad. That was fine and it stopped. if not it would have carried on going.

Weird.

Hi Liam,

I've been looking into this issue. Email's appear to be added to the queue correctly. If I click the submit button twice they will be added twice.

If an email fails to send it will not be removed from the queue and it will attempt to resend each time it's reached when the queue is polled. Within RC3 failed email's will only attempt to re-send 3 (this will be configurable in later releases) times before being completely removed from the queue.

As the message currently stays in the queue this may explain why you received several error reports as it's attempting to re-send each time the email's are polled. You can for the moment visit the Manage Queued Email's page and delete the problem email if it's not leaving the queue.

I'm really not sure why your users are reporting receiving the email several times, was this every user? This should certainly not be the case, i've not been able to replicate locally. Any further information would certainly be appreciated.

I'll continue to investigate and ensure this is working as expected.

Even hitting it twice you wouldn't expect people to receive it in the end 12 times.

Doing the automatically send route ended up with 8 copies being sent.

Ryan - anything I can do here? Happy to look at logs etc.

We've sent out multiple batches without any problems. However, that's without hitting send twice.

Just received confirmation from a member that they received the email eight times - this being the one I sent once.

In desperation I have just restarted the entire server, and this has fixed it.

Anybody else experienced this problem?

They did indeed receive too many.
The latest one i tried I hit Send once. I'm still getting returned mails from email addresses that no longer exist. That's fine. What worries me is that I have received the same error message 12 times, I kid you not. Our mail server is not set up to send badmails this frequently..

Any ideas?

My big concern is that I will log off tonight, check my mail tomorrow and find it's still sending out..

As I understand it the Bulk Messages are programmed to send in batches of 50 emails, every 60 seconds. Did your members get 8 copies of the email? You said you hit sent twice, so if they got only 1 or 2 copies of the message I bet its working correctly.
