For my purposes I would prefer username. However, I do think it should be an option.

I disagree entirely. As stated by someone else, at least make it an option. Email authentication is the way to go. Users end up with the same user accounts and emails that are 4 generations old. This does nothing for the "stickiness" of your site if you can't draw folks back to your forums with an email. When people see that email in their account, they recognize that they need to change it if their email address has been changed. If they're logged in and don't have access to their email it's no big deal to change it. If they're not logged in, means can be had to assure a change takes place (secondary passwords, i.e. place of birth, favorite pet, yada). The goal is to keep up-to-date emails, and making it a part of your login is a fantastic step to doing so.
