Fresh manual install

I've manually installed InstantForum 4.1.4 into a fresh, properly hosted Virtual Directory in IIS, and changed the InstantForum web.config to the proper address and login info for my SQL Server 2005(hosted on a seperate box). I ran the 'InstantForum414.sql' and it worked without a problem.

When I attempt to navigate to Default.aspx, I am greeted with the this lovely error page:

I've been struggling with this all day and I've tried everything I can think of. The real kicker is that when I install the whole package it locally, everything works perfectly. If I point my local installation of InstantForum414 to my HOSTED database instead of my local database, I'm greeted with the above error as well.

Any ideas?

New Intallation - Javascript not working with .net 2.0 RTM

Hi,

I purchased and installed the forum software last weekend. I've been running the official release of Vs 2005 and .NET 2.0 since 28/10. However, whilst the majority of the forum works correctly, anything related to Javascript does not.

This means that the login page, register page are inaccessible from any button click. Has anyone else experienced this or have a solution for me?

I've seen other posts related to this issue on .NET 1.1, but those fixes have not worked in this instance.

I've registered this issue with support, but am still waiting for a reply. I've replicated this across two different machines, so I've either made the same mistake twice, or something is not quite right.

sub-domain installation

Just wondered if anyone had any issues with running a fresh forum install using sub-domains... I've already got a ticket opened up for this but thought if anyone in the community has had this before and knew what the fix was.....

Basically, when accessing the forum via a sub-domain i.e. http://test.mysite.com/forum a config error saying I need to configure as virtual directory. This has already been done but when accessing the sub-domain again, the config error stll appears. The forum sits under the the root folder of the web app.

just setup instantforum with the automatic install, all seemed to go well and a sucsesfull message came up. Then i clicked to run and the following message comes up.

Can I develop InstantForum 4.1.4 using VS 2005/2008 Express Editions?

I am just starting to develop a Forum site in 4.1.4.

I have VS2003 Pro and SQL Server 2000 but my client wants me to develop the site in 2005/2008 Express editions.

I have tried to convert the solution using both Visual Basic and Visual Web Dev 2005 Express editions but am running into various problems, such as "Conversion Wizard Error: Web Project Component not Installed", and "Unable to Write to Output File" in my IIS.

Also, my 'localhost' development url doesn't work with your licensing system when a port is given, as happens when you debug a project using the built-in VS2005 test server.

Is what I'm trying to do possible, or am I wasting my time?

I installed the forum last Thursday, and since then the forum has been up and down. To date, no one has responded to the support ticket I submitted (24/11) nor to any personal PMs I have sent through this forum. I expect at least an acknowledgement of the support ticket, even if no one has time to work it.

Running forum in release build instead of debug build

When I use release build dll's to run the forum, it stops working after a certain time (can run fine for up to 20 hours). The error I receive is that it could not find file Pages.config. After restarting IIS everything works fine again, until the same exception pop ups again. Anybody experiencing the same issue?

I also noticed that the InstantASP.Licensing.dll that came with the forum is a debug build !!!

Hello, I choose the forum for site and i have a question. In your documentation (web.config) there's a lines:

User Authentication Query

This is probably an obvious question and the answer will be documented somewhere but i'm just trying to understand how InstantForum authenticates an user on a per page basis. Like when you go to the Default.aspx page on a fresh install, you can see a single public forum - "InstantForum.NET v4.1.4" and a user can go into a topic and view it. However, if you click on the reply/quote/... buttons then you are prompted to log in to the system.

Can anyone explain how this is coded? I have a developer license through work and i've looked at the code behind for the pages that require the user to log in and i've compared them to the pages that don't require the user to log in but i can't see any difference.

As i said, this is probably an obvious question.

Email is not sent to SMTP server

Hi,

I have set up ASP forums and I'm about 95% done with integration and configuration. I saved e-mail till the end because I work with web servers frequently and it looked like a snap. Plug in the right SMTP IP address and make sure the SMTP server can relay for the IP address of the board. Bam! That should be it.

I can't get message to go anywhere. They are cued according to the forum, and according to the table in the database there have been 0 send attempts.

I've tried, several SMTP server names and IP address including

localhost
(the IP address for the forum is residing on)
(the IP address for the SQL server the database is installed on)
mail.isa-arbor.com
the name of the computer the forum is residing on
the name of the computer the SQL server is residing on.

I have SMTP servers running at each location and can verify through other means that they are working.

HELP! I'm stuck.

Howdy.

I have a question that some of you may have already dealt with.

I am implementing the forums into an existing site.
My site already has an internal mail system (between members), so I will not be using the 'instantforums' mail/pm system.

Since I am not using the IF mail/pm system, I removed the 'control panel' link from the forum pages (most of the stuff in the control panel is related to the messaging sytem - inbox, outbox...)

But - I still need to allow my users to manage their topic/forum subscriptions.

So my question is - has anyone out there come up with a creative way to let users manage their subscriptions, without seeing all the other 'control panel' options?

I guess I could just remove the un-needed options from the control panel, and remove the word 'control panel' from the navigation menu, but Im hoping someone found a better way.

Hi Guys,

We purchased your forum script back in 2006 and we recently changed HOST and got another server.

We tried to install the script but getting an error telling us "The domain license for InstantForum.NET installed at "http://forum.recipmanager.com" could not be obtained from the InstantASP activation server"

But the forum was installed at the same location on the other HOST.

We now have a different IP so I was wondering if that is the reason we get the error.

Slow bringing up forum

Our forum has been extremely slow trying to bring it up.

Even using localhost on the actual server itself, bringing up the forum locally is extremely slow - literally 5 to 10 minutes to bring up a page.

Connection to the forum server computer itself has no problems and no delays.

Connection to the SQL Server 2000 itself has no problems.

Also confirmed DNS name resolution not issue - also shown by same speed bringing up forum web pages slow using localhost or 127.0.0.1 or internal ip address.

Problem appears to be with the forum database itself?

Running Windows 2003 with latest patches and SQL Server 2000 with all patches.

Latest patches were applied Saturday and system rebooted same.

I may be wrong, but I was finding connecting slow on Thursday / Friday before the patches were applied (2 - 5 minutes to bring up), but since Saturday morning even more so (5 to 10 minutes)

I've uninstalled all applied patches that were applied on Saturday to ensure none were the cause - displaying the forum pages still extremely slow same as previous. Preveious patches were applied last Oct 16 2005 and issues did not begin occurring till this week.

Interestingly as well, attempting to connect to this InstantASP community forum is extremely slow - literally 5 to 10 minutes to bring up any page - including regular web pages off of www.instantasp.co.uk

Is any one else experiencing this? and if so, any recommendations?

I am a member of the Pensacola fishing forum, which uses this format and when I get a private message it asks would you like to go there and gives you two choices yes or cancel. I push yes over and over and nothing happens. When I push cancel it takes me back to home page and I have to enter the messages again. How do I fix this problem

Copying a forum

Once you have created a complex forum set with member groups and permission sets, is it possible to copy/ duplicate that forum set to get away from setting another forum set up from ground zero. I basically want ten forum sets the same. The only thing that would change is the member groups???:)

I have about 5 domains pointing to the same forum. For some reason, the forum is not staying within the domain is was entered using. for example, if I enter the site using www.site1.com and login, I am sent to www.site2.com. Also, all the links are going to site2.com even though I entered through site1.com.

Is there a way to keep the site using the same domain name that you entered from?

I am close to having this script working but i am having a little trouble with the topics. i have to combine threads and messages from MegaBBS and for some reason my conversion is not coming through. I was hoping someone could take a peek and see what i am doing wrong. some of the conversion works but it seems that when their are multiple pages i am only getting data from the first page across the multiple other pages. ie. Forum > Topic > Pages 1,2,3 Page 2 and 3 messages are the same as page 1. Hopefully that makes sense? anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

User Login Integration

have a login on my current site that I would like to use to kickoff authentication to IF.

I have read all the documentation and have set up the web.config in both apps.

(Both my current website and IF are in different web apps and its in C#)

I am using the following to authenticate

Session Variables Disappear

I added instantforum to a running site (www.someplace.com), and created the "FORUM" application in IIS.

When I transfer to my forum page (www.someplace.com\forum), all my session variables are reset.

It seems there are 2 sets of session variables and the forum does not share with my original site and vice versa. Is there a way to force them to do so? I want to access the session variables created on my main site in the forum.

E-mails stuck in queue

No matter what generated the e-mails, the e-mails get stuck in the queue and are never sent out. Then all of a sudden, randomly, the queue empties itself.

Where is the e-mail queue code being called? Application_OnStart? Session_OnStart? Master Pages code-behind? Elsewhere?

Error Message: Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.

Breakpoints not working

I set up a copy of InstantForum414 on my test server and opened/converted the solution.

I can run the site but when I put breakpoints into the code, the debugger never stops.

has anyone seen this before? Did I set something up wrong?

Firstly, I am a new customer/user of Instant ASP. I am however a .Net developer by trade.

I entered a ticket on this issue a 4 days ago (unanswered thus far), and am now going to look to the community for support on this as
well.

After using the manual install to install the forums to my hosted site (hosted with Godaddy for the time being) I encountered and error attempting to log in with the default admin criteria.

I encountered a few issues along the way:
1. The provided DB setup script will not run as is through a web based enterprise type manager. Inline (--) type comments don't parse correctly.
2. Skin folder for the Classic skin was incorrectly named. First launch I received and error stating that the "ClassicSkin" masterpage could not be found. Renaming the "Classic" directory to "ClassicSkin" solved this issue.
3. The data portion of the DB setup script won't run through the web based manager. Forum Folder creation fails as it depends on user data which hasn't been created yet. Reordering the script to create the Forum Folders after the users have been created solved this issue.

After getting site running on the host to this point I decided to attempt a local install. Using the same manual setup process, I met the same error locally. Note the supplied DB setup script runs fine in the full SQL 2005 enterprise manager.

At this pointed I decided to try the MSI installer locally. Lo and behold everything installed and ran fine.

After many more hours of trouble shooting, I discovered this appears to be a data issue.

Default install sets the PermissionID column in the InstantForums_Users to 0. There is no Permission set with an ID of 0. Manually updating this column to 5 (Forum administrator permission set) allows login to work.....sort of. After logging in with this change, the Admin CP will not show.

I have attempted to compare the MSI installed database vs the manually created, and I don't see anything that jumps out at me.

Suggestions? Thoughts?

SQL Optimisation Script/Advice?

Hey all,

I'm preparing to deploy an upgrade from v3.x to v4.1.4 and performance is okay when run in development, i.e. single computer, but when on our staging site on the live server, performance is sluggish, with no obvious resource issues for IIS or SQL. The V3 instance is a hell of a lot faster and giving me some cause for concern.

I've run a tuning wizard on the database which found room for 60% improvement, but this was on a small data set as I haven't had much time to hammer the system.

Does anyone either an optimisation script or any advice? I suspect the right indexes and stats aren't there which is why things are slow, but I want to get this sorted before deployment. I know I can always deploy then collect tuning data and optimise again, but I'd rather get it as quick as possible before launch.

Need help with removing SPAN tag around HTML

I just finished upgrading to version 4.1.4, thanks for fast replies from the support staff on this forum.

I have modified skins and the MasterTemplate, but I noticed a big problem just now: A SPAN tag is insterted around the antire HTML code!
This tag makes my markup invalid, and Firefox enters quirks mode. Because of this, I cannot use the XHTML DTD, and the page will render differently in different browsers.

Look how messed up the HTML becomes:

I just wanted to drop a short note to tell you guys how pleased we are with your product. We purchased the single user/site development license and began by cracking open the code (we're ASP.NET hacks - lol). After about an hour roaming around in the code, we discovered that your admin tools already had 97%+ of the functionality we 'thought' we would need to add...

...in addition your install processes worked flawlessly.

Also, we were able to very easily upgrade to VS 2005 with everything working 100% (as far as we can tell so far).
