Importing Users into the DB

So, I am working on an import script that will import the Users from my SQL database into the InstantForum database. I am 99.9% of the way there but I am running into one small problem. Here are the steps I am taking to import... am I missing anything?

- Insert my Users into InstantASP_Users, setting PrimaryRoleID to 2
- Insert Users from InstantASP_Users into InstantForum_Users, setting PermissionID to 2
- Inserting a row into InstantASP_UsersRoles for each UserID (RoleID = 1)
- Inserting a row into InstantASP_UsersRoles for each UserID (RoleID = 2)

I can see all the users in the database, the system allows me to login with one of the users.... but... Once the login is successfull it looks as though I am still logged in as a guest and I am not logged in at all.

Duplicate Emails, Automated Login

I have integrated login working for a setup, it's been working fine for quite some time and all is well in the world.

Due to a change of requirements I'm now compelled to allow duplicate emails.

As a result of this I'd *like* to set the User.Identity.Name field to the (unique) username field inorder to identify the logged in user.

Does anyone know if/how thsis can be achieved and if there are any other pitfalls to allowing non-unique email addresses in InstantForums?

InstantForum and ASP.net Login Control

Just want to start a discussion here. I brought up an integration question to Ryan in regards to ASP.Net 2.0's Login Control and Membership Services and this is what he said:

"With regards to the ASP.NET v2.0 Login Control i'm wondering if a public discussion on the forums would be best this way others can benefit from our findings. I'll set aside some time to take a look at this. It's a little crazy at the moment so i'm not sure exactly when but it's should be this week. I don't see this being to tricky.

I haven't tried integrating it yet so I don't have any specific questions. But if you do and have tried it, I'd like to hear your experiences and questions.

Javascript menu in the masterpage.ascx

ok i've got a javascript menu that runs fine within the masterpage.ascx file on my localhost, but as soon as i upload it to the main server it doesn't work. now the really weird thing is that it works on firefox if there is a text box on the forum page. It doesn't work at all on ie.
There are two links below, the first wont work at all, the second which will work on firefox only.

ok wait you need to be logged in to get those pages... it works on the post.aspx page, not on all pages with the text box actually, no not the login page. it also works on the second page of the login after you have accepted the forum rules and regulations so it will be easy to see the after you follow that link.
Please can someone shed some light on this, it has frustrated as few people working on this, especially the fact that it works on localhost but not online!!!

A masterpage Jury Rig that works well

ok this solves using dynamic code from a .vb file in the .ascx masterpage.
hack your main master page in 'mini masterpages' and put these .aspx's into iframes on the masterpage.ascx file.
add as much as you can to the masterpage.ascx file and you should be able to get away with one maybe two for your dynamic content.
It's not the best solution, but it works and doesn't take too much coding time.
Crude but effective:D

Poll Integration

Is it possible to pull the poll functionality out to use as a control on a page in a website? We'd want to maintain full functionality i.e. people can vote and only see the results if they have already voted.

EDIT:: Acctualy - in addition to this - is it possible to pull through the latest forum posts on the site i.e. list the last 5 posts with links to the thread.

Nesting master page

A couple of days ago I bought a license of this excellent forum and now I'd like to integrate it into my web site' master page. I'd like to nest (inherit) forum layout from my master page: is there a way to do that?

Windows Live ID Integration

Cannot jump to topic for anonymous user when IF is a subweb

I successfully integrated IF into my company's main ASP 2.0 website as a subweb last year. Now an enhancement requires me to allow an anonymous user to jump directly to a forum post from the parent web home page. What happens is that the user gets redirected to the forum home page instead of the forum post.

If the user is logged into the parent web, I authenticate them into the forum as well at login time and the direct link into the forum post works for that scenario.

I would really appreciate it if anyone has gotten the anonymous jump from a parent web page to work. Thank you!

Forum pathing issues

I have v4.1.4 installed on our server under the forum directory. The root of the website is one directory up, eg:

C:\wwwroot\inetpub\
C:\wwwroot\inetpub\forum

I can't seem to get the pathing to work correctly. Here's what I've done:

- Copied the settings from the forum's web.config into the web.config in my root. Removed the old copy.
- Copied Pages.config into the root. Removed the old copy.
- Copied URLRewrite.config into the root. Removed the old copy.
- Copied the files from the forum's bin into the root's bin.
- Modified the Pages.config. Here's the entries:
/forum/Configuration
/forum/Globalization
/forum/JavaScript
/URLRewrite.config
- The InstantASP_VirtualPath setting in my web.config is empty (I've tried filling it in and changes the settings in Pages.config to remove the /forum, but that also throws similar errors).

When I attempt to access the forum with it configured this way, I end up with an error: Could not find file: 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\forum\Pages.config'. I've tried copying it back into the forum directory only to receive errors about other config files.

What are these config files supposed to look like? I can't seem to find the magic combination to get everything to work.

Forum not recognizing users through our login process

We had a website named www.notasucker.com which is developed in a mix of classic ASP and ASP.NET 1.1, for which we had your forum software Instant Forum 4.1.4.0.
We are getting it tough to integrate the Forum software of your with our site.
We are trying to integrate and synchronize our login process with the forum software. That is we want "if user successfully login with his ID and Password to our website and he clicks on the link to forum then he should successfully login automatically to forum also, without entering his loginID and Password again".
In the process of achieving our goal we took reference from yoursite also:--
Things we had done till now:
1) Executed the Forum's exe and installed it to our sites root directory. (../InstantForum414/ )
2) Copied our existing users from Users table in our site's database to InstantASP_Users table created by the forum softare in our database, containing UserId , Pwd, Date Of Birth , Last Login time , UserName etc)
3) Made the necessary changes to the web.config of our website and the also to the web.config in the ../InstantForum414/ , as per the user documentation provided by you.

1) When a user logs in to our site using his ID and Password and goes to forum,on the forum's default page he has to login again. We want to remove this repeatation ,so that when a user logs in to www.notasucker.com and wishes to navigate to forum he is not asked for the UserId and password again.

Integrating InstantForums with an existing web app (will it ever work?)

Like many of you I am attempting to use InstantForum (IF) as a plugin component. I have a web application already built and now the client wants to add Forums as a new community feature. We don't want to go writing yet another app specific forum component so IF looked like the ideal candidate.

I'll be honest and admit that maybe I am just missing a big trick here but it seems to me that it is just plain impossible to integrate this product in the expected (to me) way. I thought I would be dropping a user control onto a page, maybe running some sql scripts to add the tables and stored procs required and probably importing some users to the forum's user table to get it started. I was even happy to double up my user authentication / registration / deletion to keep my app's users synchronized with IF's users. Was it that easy? Well no it was not.

The first shock was discovering that IF requires its own IIS application. Unless you run IF under its own application its URL rewriting cries foul e.g 'cannot find file xxx1-0-1.aspx' because it cannot map the generated url to actual aspx pages.

I solved this by putting the IF code in my project and then running it under a virtual directory with its own application. Now the url rewriting works and everything is dandy (or is it - see static data issue later)

I don't want my users to jump to the naked default page of IF when they click on my 'Forums' link. Instead what I want to do is 'embed' IF into the central pane of my page and have all the usual clutter (navigators, search boxes, advert nuggets etc) surrounding the forum content.

So what I need to do go to the IF skins folder and update the master page to include my structure and controls. There is an IF control called <InstantForum:Content> that I make sure is positioned in my structure so the forums all appear in the central pane as I require.

But hold on, how can use the controls from my web app inside the IF app? Easy, just add another vanilla virtual dir (with no associated app) inside the IF virtual dir and point it at the folder containing all my ascx files then include my app's dll in the IF bin directory and now the controls work and IF works.

Marvelous.

Except I am now running two copies of my original web app. One for all the pages in my site and one for all the pages in IF's site. So what? Well apart from being inefficient my app relies on static data and session data (this is the 'static data issue' I mentioned earlier). So when the site first kicks off it retrieves and statically caches a bunch of stuff (static is available application wide so all sessions share the same cached data). Also, when a user logs some details are stored in session.

So now the user logs in to my site. I do my duty and auto-log the user in to IF using their API. All is well. The user navigates to the forums page and so starts a new version of my app. In this new copy of my app there is no logged in user and no statically cached data. Not good.

Around this time I began to think that maybe there is another product out there that just provides a 'forum-in-a-control' like I wanted in the first place. However I was willing to keep trying.

So I updated the IF global asax to initialize its very own copy of my app and dealt with the user issue. All seemed to be well, if a bit bloated and sweaty. Then I hit the final issue that all of a sudden I just could not find the strength to solve, which is why I am here really.

Whenever a postback is issued within IF the damn thing falls over with:

Any thoughts anybody? Have you managed to integrate IF into your existing web app? Can somebody tell me definitively whether IF is designed to run as a completely distinct application / website?

P.S. I also tried to encapsulating an <iframe> in a control hosted IF as a completely seperate site. That worked, sort of. There were issues but the one that stopped me was the iframe could not deal with dynamically resizing itself to its content because IF uses client-side script to do all that fancy snap-open / closed panels. I could have fixed this but guess what, the IF javascript that does the snap-open / closed was all pre-compiled into a dll again. Lord.

I've got the forums running on my website... Finally!! My delay entirely, but anyways.
I now need to integrate the logins and authentications.
I'm using the standard membership controls that you get with asp.net 2.0.
I would have a bash at this myself before posting on here, but I know that there are many people who will have done it before...

Pasing session values from my site to IF site

Hi,

I am able to go to IF from my site but still the code for login doesnot work. I have even used InstantASP.Common.Authentication.Authentication.Login(... ); But it still doesnot login... When i check the last login date it is not getting updated and still shows me the previous date.

I guess the reason for this is, the session values from my site is not getting passed to the IF site. Kindly let me know how this can be achieved. People who have succeeded in integrating their site with the IF kindly help me out in this.

Using IF as a subsite

I am trying to integrate IF with my site. I want the user who is logged in to my site to be logged in to IF as well. I know most of the people are trying to do this. But according to the discussions i have gone through i see that there is no solution to this issue. If i am wrong kindly forgive me and let me know the solution to how to integrate IF with my own site.

If the above mentioned is not possible then kindly give me suggestions on if i can make use of IF as a subsite in my site. If so kindly guide me on how this could happen.

my RegEx in URLRewrite.config is:

Integration with ASP.NET-Classic ASP mix site

Hi,

We recently bought IF for our community website and wanted to integrate it withthin the website. The problem is that our current site is written in a mix of ASP and ASP.NET (v 1.1) pages (no forms authenticaton, simple database based username and password checking).

Also, new members registration (including Account update section) is written in classic ASP (and NOT ASP.NET).

Now I was going through other similar posts on integration in these forums, and found somelinks like:

Now here the option suggested is to mirror users in both app user table and forums user table using Forums API. But since we have the user registration module in ASP, we cannot use the .NET API. Is there some other way to integrate the forums within our website?

Adding Links to MainNavigation

I am trying to add another link to the main navigation bar, I edited the MainNavigation.ascx and added by new code:

Any C# Code Samples for integrating existing Web app and Forum?

I'm having trouble (along with several people) trying to integrate the InstantForum into my web application.

I'm running the Forum in a sub directory of the main site, have merged the web.config and got the connection to my SQL2005 database working and imported my application Users into the forum tables.

But when a user logs into my site I've checked the forum users and called

InstantASP.Common.Authentication.Authentication .Login(User, true );

but navigating to the forum tab, shows the user as guest. I've looked at the help files and read through several forum topics but still no luck.

Please help...

Authenticating from a parent application

I'm trying to figure out how the authentication from another program works. In my parent application I run the following code whenever anyone logs in:

user.Authenticate(True , False )

From my understanding this will authenticate anyone logging in as userID #1, which is the admin, unconditionally.

Both the parent web.config and InstantForum has the <machine key="..."> as suggested in the help files.

However when I go to the forums after logging in to the parent application, InstantForums still asks me to log in.

How is the information in the user.Authenticate() persisted? As a cookie? Session variable? Does the parent and the forum application need to have the same applicationID? But I thought the machineKey part is supposed to take care of this. Is there more than user.Authenticate() for the login process? The documentation sounds like this is all you have to, but it is clearly not working.

Bulk email CSS location

System.IO.FileNotFoundException

I've been trying to integrate InstantForum with another site and I keep on getting the System.IO.FileNotFoundException exception. As far as I can tell it's trying to look for a file called login.aspx, which I recall seeing it exist before when I install InstantForum on my local machine. However now as I look back at the directories or the zipped file that contains all the files, I cannot find such file. I have not modified any of the filenames or links in the developer version so I do not believe it's redirecting to a nonexistent page. I've had InstantForum working at one point without the integrated logins, but now it is not loading up at all, integrated or not.

Problme with development version

I have purchased the developer license and I'm trying to modify the code via opening InstantForumDeveloper.sln, but the code does not compile and gives me a lot of error in the form of:

I can call the API by including the references in another solution, but I have not been able to modify the API itself as it won't compile.

Also, suppose on my site's login page I have something like:

do some stuff()

InstantForum.Login(someone)

At this point they're only authenticated to the site, but they should be logged in to the forum as well. Will this work if InstantForum is on another application pool, or will the components of InstantForum have to be included in my solution so that this login persists to when the user actually selects the forum?

Tracking anonymous users with custom integration

I've done a search and can't find anything on this. Does anyone know how you add and remove anonymous members to the who's on tracking system? I'm using my own user-management-system to authenticate users and this works fine for members, but I don't see how you track anonymous users as well?

It was quite simple in v3, but this functionality seems to have changed. I've tried looking over the source, but it's eluding me! Any help appreciated, thanks!

User login integration

Hi There

I just cannot get this to work - I'm sure it is a configuration issue or something like that, so any help would be appreciated. I have a .NET website which is using forms authentication already. I have installed Instant ASP in a subdirectory of this application "forum". The web.config in my root application has

<authentication><forms name="APPAUTH" etc.

The web.config in the forum folder has

<authentication><forms name="InstantASP" etc.

I have followed all the advice of setting this up (same machinekey, copied DLL's to both bin folders etc.), and on login of my application, I am calling User.Authenticate with a valid username and password. This all seems to work OK, and using HTTP Fiddler, I can see that the Cookie is created successfully for InstantASP. However, as soon as I enter the forum folder from a browser, I can see that the cookie is explicitly cleared (again I see this using Fiddler).

Why is this? How can I get the forum to recognise the cookie from my login? If I login using the form within the forum this works OK. Anything obvious spring to mind? I created the user using the API with no problems.

Thanks in advance for any assistance - I've run out of things to try. I am using v 4.1.4 by the way.

Hey All, this is likely pretty simple and I have searched though the documentation but can't seem to find it.

I am looking to extract the user name for a welcome message when they sign in from the website instead of the forums. this code,
System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
displays the users email address and not the actual username

I created a work around by querying the database with a T-SQL statement that gets the user filtered by the result of
System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
But that just causes an extra call to the database

What line of code do I need to get the UserName?

Adding Users to Groups

I have almost finished integrating InstantForum in to my website, using my own login and registration pages to allow you to login to the forum. The problem comes when I want to add the user i've just created to multiple groups or roles. I can see the User.UserRolesCollection.Add() function. But I do not know how I can get an object of the custom role that i created (i.e. ones other than Administrator, Member, Anonymous, etc.)

How can I get my custom roles to add to my UserRolesCollection.

Mmmm.. all this talk of rolls is making me hungry.

Authentication Integration

Hello all,

I have InstantForums 4.1.4 and am trying to integrate into my already existing application. My application already has it's own web.config and we are NOT using forms authentication (we are using a homegrown auth system). However, we'd like to seamlessly integrate instantForums into our own authentication system. I've read the how-tos and the implemented the code snippets. Here is the behavior i'm seeing:

--User is authenticating into MY application. After that is successful, I then log them into the InstantForum app with this API call: InstantASP.Common.Authentication.Authentication.Login

--I can step through this code and see the cookie and ticket be created. At this point, all seems to work just fine. No exceptions are thrown

--However, when I then browse to the InstantForum folder in my application, the forums software doesn't recognize the user as being logged in.

Am I not able to authenticate b/c my application is not using forms authentication? If this is the case, is there a known work around?

I have a function which is adding a new user to our aplication. I would like to add to this function a new function which will be also adiing a user to a Forum with the same password and user name as in the aplication.

The problem is that when I'we made this function, there is an Exception that The ConnectionString property has not been initialized. How can I fixed it??? Where I should Initialize the Connection string???
