Search does not find numbers in knowledgebase articles ?

Hi,

I have a knowledge base article which consists of lines like this

0x8001 - Description of 0x8001
0x8002 - Description of 0x8002

etc...

When I use the find function to find the number 8001, the search function does not return any articles.

However when I search for 0x8001 or even x8001 , the search function returns the correct article.

It seems the search function needs minimal one letter ?

Is there a setting that does this or is it not possible to search for just numbers ?
It did work in the old version (1.3).

I want one group who can do everything in the staff CP and another group who only can create articles.
I wonder if I can do that with the admin CP or if I must make news files.

Evaluation Questions

I am currently evaluating KB and I have the following questions:

1. Is it possible to have multiple knowledge bases in different languages and be able to access and search them with a single login ?

2. Is it possible to create a view that displays the article's body text only ?

I will try to be more specific, so imagine the following scenario. I want to use InstantKB as a Book content database. Each knowledge base would be a Book, each Category would be a book's chapter and each article would be a paragraph. So if I click on a Category (chapter), I would like to View all the paragraphs that belong to that Category (chapter) sorted by a special ID or maybe a User Field. I have been unable to find the Text field to add it in the View definition.
Would this be possible or it requires code modification ?

Modifying InstantKB 2.0

I am hopeful someone out there can get me pointed in the right direction. Today, I was tasked with modifying InstantKB 2.0.

This is the change request I was sent:

Here is a recap for what I need:

1. Would they have to sign on to this once they are in the intranet?

My Translation: Can we auth against Active directory, or where should I look for the security model?

2. Can areas not used be deactivated?

My Translation: Can we deactivate troubleshooter and downloads tabs

3. Employee views:

a. Why can the document not be opened?

My Translation: They have uploaded a word doc and it opens as a raw file in html, while we would like to have it open into word

b. Can the custom fields show in employee view?

c. Can we not have the comment section?

d. Default procedures in alphabetical order?

My Translation: Can we set a default filter on the datasets to be on the title desc

e. Can title bar of article list show the whole path?

My Translation: In the title where the rss feed icon is could we display the heirchary

4. Staff section

a. Can we change the name and selections under Misc Informationpredefinedd areas

Got this one, it was under the Admin template

b. Can we require a certain format or have templates?

My Translation: On the textfile control, can we limit the fonts, colors, etc..

Also, if there is any API docs out there, where would I find them?

KB 2.0 under HTTPS

When I first uploaded the new version of the KB to our web server, I was dismayed to discover that some of the images were not displaying. When I took a closer look, I saw that the src attribute was something like:

It took me a bit of rooting around, but I discovered that there are a few instances in the code that look like:

If ctlSomeControl.Image.IndexOf("http://") >= 0 Then

I had to add:

Or ctlSomeControl.Image.IndexOf("https://") >= 0

before the images would be correctly displayed. I'm working out of 2.0.1 at the moment, but I did a diff on the 2.0.2 code and the bug seems to be there as well.

Just an FYI.

Forgive me for being a newbie, but we have a new installation of instantkb.net v2.0 and it is working but I do not see any documentation on how to actually *use* the software...
1) how do you actually post a new KB article?
2) how do you get started to use the troubleshooter to post content?

KB content control on our version numbers

This is not a technical question but more of a question on best practice.

We're a software company that's in the process of setting up a KB.

There are various categories covering the products:

Products

---Product 1

|---Installation

---Product 2

|---Installation

We release new versions of the products as least once a year and so some general articles will apply to all versions and others to the latest version or previous versions only.

Has anyone got any opinion on how the categories should be set up?
Customers will want to be able to look at their version only.

Would you have categories/subcategories for each version number?
Would you move all articles for previous versions into an "Archive" folder?
Would the product version just be a Tag you can search on?
Would you just add "Applies to Version 5.2" at the end of the article text?

Active Directory?

I have seen this go back and forth over the years but I was wondering if anyone knew for sure if AD integration was going to be a part of this 2.0 final release. It would make it a lot easier for our techs to get in and create/manage kb content without an extra username/password.

We use instant KB on a purely internal basis.

Anonymous access to articles or registration being re-directed to logon.aspx?!

As above - our InstantKB v2.0.2 installation, although working fine in every other way, won't allow anonymous users to either access content (that has relevant permissions) or even register via register.aspx - everything is redirected to logon.aspx unless you login.

Given that this doesn't occur out-of-the-box (welcome kb article), I'm assuming we have a database setting or config value that's been mis-configured (either by InstantKB or manually).

Any ideas on how to resolve this, or even where this is controlled (we have the dev source)?

just wondering if it's possible to keep both of them into same VS solution just because I did it and an error came up: "

error BC30560: 'RadSpell' is ambiguous in the namespace 'Telerik.WebControls'.

It seems the issue is related to RadSpell.dll and RadSpell.NET2.dll what can't live together (just my opinion :cool:)

Enhancment Requests and Bug Notification

Well I finally found a couple of spare hours where I could install the final version and do some good testing. Bellow are the items I've found so far. I'm about to send the link to my co-workers so they can test the system themselves, this afternoon, and if they are happy, hopefully I'll be going live with the new system later this week (Fingers crossed).

Enhancements

· URL Mapping Old Links

o Is it possible to get a page created “oldlinks.aspx” where URLS like: http://intranet/kb20/?cNode=1L6T2T&pNodes=5U3R1S:4B2U3M are re-directed/Mapped to it. That page would then look up in the old “InstatnKB_Tree” table (i’d restore a copy from old 1.3 db) for cNode get the CategoryName, find the categoryName in the new Categories table, if found get the ID and redirect to: http://intranet/kb20/KnowledgebaseCategoryXYZ.aspx

I hope that makes sense

· When sorting Categories, it would be handy to have a drag and drop, rather than just moving up one at a time.

Bugs

· Staff Home --> Pending Comments

§ Untick “show only comments pending ...” doesn’t work.

o Does work though if go KB à Manage Comments

· Reports

o Seem to be working better, but still aren’t accurate.

· Custom Field

o When Editing a multi value custom field. “Is Selected” isn’t selected when going back into the field. (I've checked the db is being updated, just when you go to update, you have to remember to reselect the one you want, or none will be selected.)

· Export to PDF still doesn’t work for old articles (ie ones imported from 1.3)

Hope all that makes sense. If it doesn't please don't hesitate to say so.

Query of Knowledgebase

I can't see how the user posts a question to the kb and a selection of likely hits is given - to prevent the same or similar question being asked. I thought this was in this release.
Have checked the feature list and can't find anything that sounds like this sort of feature.

Storage Limit for Attachments

How do I modify the storage limit for attachments? I need it to be far larger than the default 50MB but there is no field in the admin CP that deals with this.

I upgraded to 2.01 this afternoon - no errors in the SQL script and the code copied across fine, but when I look at my knowledgebase now, the tree view is empty - I can still edit categories, amend articles etc, but the tree view remains blank.

Rewriting 1.3 style URL's to 2.0 style

I would like to upgrade my InstantKB 1.3 to 2.0.1 but I don't want to break the many external references to URL's in the format of Article.aspx?id=10000. I tried to edit URLRewrite.config but I don't know how to deal with the id parameter. Does anybody know how to do this?

I trying to upgrade my InstantKB 1.3 to 2.0.1. So far things are pretty good. However, I can't find any way of seeing or adding related artciles? Is this feature gone? Will it be added soon? What is the best alternative to this functionality?

Creating 'Question' tab

Have updated to KB 201 to fix the custom tab problem.

However I cannot workout how to get the custom tab to display the "create question" form and apply a workflow.
I assum what I am trying to do is correct, which is simply give users the right to create a question and have it be passed to staff for response and approval.
Alternatively has anybody successfully created any form of custom tab with a workflow behind it?
I seem to be missing some part of the process and in the custom tab I create I only get the latest article form.

Problem with translation to dutch : Invalid XML character

I have started to translate the software but ran into a problem with certain characters

I have a problem with certain characters in the globalization xml file.

here is one example from Resources.xml:

Upgrade problems (database specific)

I'm sure I brought this up before (perhaps I spoke direct with ryan on it) but I have upgrade errors.

Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 27

Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'RoleID', table 'kb2.dbo.instantKB_CategoryRoles'; column does not allow nulls. Insert fails.

I have a lot of the above lines repeated over and over in the output of the 1.3 > 2.0 upgrade

In Instantkb_treeroles I have 0 Null values

In instantkb_treeroles I have 1474 records

In Instantkb_categoryroles I end up with 1235 so unless some truncation takes place I lose 239 records.

I can't find any NULL values anywhere except the blank line for inserting a new record.

Anyone any ideas?

Lots of Error Messages

I'm getting the "Application has encountered an unexpected problem." page cropping up all the time in between sessions of normal operation. I think the relevant section of the given information about the error is below - particularly "Object reference not set to instance of an object."

Anyone got any ideas of what may be causing this?

We've been very pleased with the general response to the 2.0 update. Inevitably as this update introduces many new features we've discovered several new bugs.

To address these problems we'll be offering a minor 2.0.1 update. This update will be available within your My.InstantASP account over the next day or two. I will of course post here once this is available.

The 2.0.1 update to date will resolve the following problems...

Fixed in 2.0.1

- Fixed issue with article secondary categories cache not updating correctly when editing content.

- Fixed issue with custom troubleshooter tabs.

- Fixed issues with print article page when logged in as administrator.

- Fixed a number of issues if you create custom tab and provide both a "Tab Type" and "Redirect URL".

- Redirect links on manage tabs page don't work correctly for redirect tabs

- Added additional checks to staff CP to ensure an exception is not raised if your staff member does not have access to any tabs

Invalid object name 'InstantASP_Users' error

Just installed the application yesterday, took me a while but finally managed to do it.
I am hosting it with dailyrazor.com

1) So far I have managed to add Tabs, custom fields, Categories but I am getting this error when trying to upload an article or download.

How to activate SEO friendly URLs?

Hello!

I activated Settings / Knowledgebase / Use search engine friendly URLs + Use content title in URLs. How to setup a wildcard application mapping now? Tooltip says i have to look in documentation (which doesn't exist for v2)! :)

I tried to insert ASP.NET ISAPI-Filter under ISAPI in IIS but this doesn't work - application doesn't start anymore. So any idea?

We are now code complete for the 2.0 release. We've addressed a number of issues from RC2 based on your feedback and you can expect to the see the final full release this week.

We are currently in the process of preparing our web site to announce the 2.0 launch. This will include updated product information, of course documentation & an updated self guided tour within our own knowledgebase is updated to reflect the changes and new features in 2.0. We'll also be working to have some video based tutorials shortly after release to demonstrate & assist with some of the more complex functionality within 2.0.

Also going forward we stilt have lots of ideas that didn't make it into the 2.0 update. Now the majority of the code base is complete we'll be pushing to provide more frequent incremental updates for both products introducing features more gradually and ensuring we can respond to new bugs & provide updates more quickly.

We'll also have an evaluation version of 2.0 ready shortly after the final release. I'll be posting regular updates here for each InstantKB.NET announcement. If your an existing customer or subscribed to our web site mailing list you'll also receive an email once the final download is available.

Questions about V2

When I ran the install script I got no "demo" categories - when i ran the 1.3 > 2.0 upgrade script I got "demo" categories, surely that's the wrong way around?

Instantkb_adminusers > FullName has been upgraded across to v2 as InstantASP_Users as Username, should that not be Username > Username and FullName > FirstName or LastName?

Oh, just realised the article has the UserName attached to it and not an almalgamation of FirstName LastName, so changing this will put usernames against the article. Actually this isn't good because it's showing people all the Usernames to everyone who visits. It would have been better to populate the FullName into either the FirstName or LastName and use that against the article as the editor.

I have had some categories appear (apart from the "demo" ones) that cannot be seen in the 1.3 version, I'm having a stab in the dark here that these categories have had the parent category deleted in 1.3 and the upgrade has defaulted them to root?

TotalVisits for users (not admin users) has had a default figure of 38 put in by the upgrade? Where's it got that from :)?

On a better note V2 looks awesome if not complicated from an admins point of view, great work chaps.:D

ASP.NET 2 Errors on RC2

Anyone else getting this with RC2 or have any idea what may be wrong?

After a short while I start getting these messages in the browser

Server Application Unavailable

The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request.

In the Application event viewer 2 Errors are logged per each time this happens, the first is:

Event ID 5000

Description: EventType clr20r3, P1 aspnet_wp.exe, P2 2.0.50727.42, P3 4333aece, P4 system, P5 2.0.0.0, P6 4333ae87, P7 333e, P8 309, P9 t0jx0bbfgrf42dpjjmc1sta2lz5btj0w, P10 NIL.

The second is

Event ID 1000

aspnet_wp.exe (PID: 2448) stopped unexpectedly.

I've tried reinstalling .NET, deleted completely the web and put back, removed the SQL db and re-upgraded. Moved the web to another location completely and set back up the application.

In the 1.3 > 2.0 rc2 upgrade script I have a few errors all relating to the same message:

Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 27

Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'RoleID', table 'kb20.dbo.InstantKB_CategoryRole', column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

I have about 30 odd of the above messages after the upgrade.
