Functionality Questions

Ryan and company,

The screen shots look great! I can't wait to see KB2.0 in action!

My question though is, can you shed some light on the new functionality within KB2.0? For example, there are tabs (ie. Downloads, Troubleshooter, Bugtracker, Projects...) displayed in your home screen shot that you do not explain the usage of. Are they just pre-defined "Views" of KB articles or is the functionality and/or usage new and different.

You guys have been busy and these screenshots show that. Thanks.

Questions about V2

When I ran the install script I got no "demo" categories - when i ran the 1.3 > 2.0 upgrade script I got "demo" categories, surely that's the wrong way around?

Instantkb_adminusers > FullName has been upgraded across to v2 as InstantASP_Users as Username, should that not be Username > Username and FullName > FirstName or LastName?

Oh, just realised the article has the UserName attached to it and not an almalgamation of FirstName LastName, so changing this will put usernames against the article. Actually this isn't good because it's showing people all the Usernames to everyone who visits. It would have been better to populate the FullName into either the FirstName or LastName and use that against the article as the editor.

I have had some categories appear (apart from the "demo" ones) that cannot be seen in the 1.3 version, I'm having a stab in the dark here that these categories have had the parent category deleted in 1.3 and the upgrade has defaulted them to root?

TotalVisits for users (not admin users) has had a default figure of 38 put in by the upgrade? Where's it got that from :)?

On a better note V2 looks awesome if not complicated from an admins point of view, great work chaps.:D

ASP.NET 2 Errors on RC2

Anyone else getting this with RC2 or have any idea what may be wrong?

After a short while I start getting these messages in the browser

In the Application event viewer 2 Errors are logged per each time this happens, the first is:

Event ID 5000

Description: EventType clr20r3, P1 aspnet_wp.exe, P2 2.0.50727.42, P3 4333aece, P4 system, P5 2.0.0.0, P6 4333ae87, P7 333e, P8 309, P9 t0jx0bbfgrf42dpjjmc1sta2lz5btj0w, P10 NIL.

The second is

Event ID 1000

aspnet_wp.exe (PID: 2448) stopped unexpectedly.

I've tried reinstalling .NET, deleted completely the web and put back, removed the SQL db and re-upgraded. Moved the web to another location completely and set back up the application.

In the 1.3 > 2.0 rc2 upgrade script I have a few errors all relating to the same message:

Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 27

Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'RoleID', table 'kb20.dbo.InstantKB_CategoryRole', column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

I have about 30 odd of the above messages after the upgrade.

Copying documents from MS Word

When you copy and past info from ms word and this contains images, this images dont show in kb cause the physical address of object. Is there any way to copy ms word documents as they are without save each image of each document and then upload it? We already have our internal kb in this format...

Problem when changing IIS virtual directory

We had created our initial documentation on kb in testing server with virtual directory named /InstantKB20. We now want to go live with that articles but need to change virtual directory name to /BAC cause that will be the official name of application on our corporation.

We charged database and articles on new server and while we're testing searches and edition of articles we cannot see images. In debugging mode on application we saw than images are saved with full path, i.e. "/InstantKB/Uploads/Images/Folder A/Img 001.png" and when we go to production server the virtual directory must change and there is not folder named /InstantKB.

Is there any way to store images and point directly to images directory or root directory without saving IIS virtual directory?

Error when uploading images

We're trying to create an article which contains 9 images concerning the same article. We create a subfolder in Uploads\Images folder containing that images. After insert 8 images succesfully we try to upload the 9th and the application doesn't answer... then Windows sends a message of low virtual memory and after another error Internet Explorer crashed.

First, we think this is cause the quantity of images allowed, but in another test we insert 12 images succesfully and in the 13th we found that error happens when you try to upload larger images (1024x768, full screen). The same error, the application doesn't answer... we check the task manager and saw the virtual memory size column at 1.6 GB on iexplore.exe.

After that the common ;) blue screen appears on Windows and the pc restarts automatically.

Application is running on development server Win 2003, 3GHz processor, 2 GB RAM.
PC for testing is WinXP, 1.7GHz processor, 512 MB RAM

¿Any idea?

Can't upload images

When you try to upload an image for your article, the restrictions are upload image file types (gif, jpg, png, bmp) and with size lower than 200 KB, but ikb only allow to upload gif file type.

1. Login into IF and check the option "Remember me", then close your browser. When you enter again into IF you are logged in.

2. Login into IKB and check the option "Remember me", then close your browser. When you enter again into IKB you are logged in.

3. When you return to IF after check the option "Remember me" in IKB, you are logged of in IF. WHen you return to IKB after check the option "Remember me" in IF, you are logged of in IKB.

I mean, you can't check both options in both apps, only the last one works.

Not refreshing categories tree

When you add/edit/delete categories from option "Manage Categories" directly on categories tree, app is not refresing this tree even if you logout and login again.

However, categories tree at support center works fine.

BETA4: Managing Categories

when I am creating / managing the categories using the Staff CP, the list on the "Manage Categories" screen is not up to date. If I go to the Knowledge base page, it shows the current list.

I haven't figured it out yet, but at some point the Staff CP Manage categories page will update itself and match other other pages. Hopefully, you can get this corrected to update the Staff list as you add categories.

To reproduce, click the "Add Category" button on the Staff/StaffManageCategories1.aspx page, then add the category, and as you go back to the manage category pages, the list does not show the category you just added.

Beta 4: Unable to Add Users/Staff members

It seems that I can't add more staff members. the "Add new member" button goes to adding a custom field page.

Can you change the background color on the "Add" buttons? Just got the site up and running, and the buttons were invisible. changing the background color to red or green might save you a bunch of "newbie" support.

Although we've made great progress we are still not feature complete. Things have taken a little longder due to some great beta feedback. I wanted to get the demo online to show our current status. We'll be keeping this demo updated every couple of days.

We only have a hand-full of features to complete however i'm sorry to say we won't meet our expected date of 31st Oct (despite working silly hours) for final release. I'll be spending a little time today running through what we still need to complete and will post further information ASAP.

I appreciate a number of you are awaiting for InstantKB.NET v2.0 and we'll be looking to make a robust release candidate available later this week. If your a new v2.0 user we will be providing upgrade scripts to move from release candidates to final release. Hopefully this will offer the opportunity for some to get started with v2.0 around our expected release date. Unfortunately we won't be able to support migrating your existing v1.3 data to v2.0 until the v2.0 schema is final.

We've also been working on documentation for InstantKB.NET v2.0. We'll actually be hosting this documentation in our online form within a instance of InstantKB.NET v2.0. Staff/Admin Permissions - Missing Function ! ?

When I was speaking to Ryan quite a while a go I thought this was going to be included, but I may have been mistaken. Can anyone confirm if the below funciton is/isn't going to be included in the final release of KB 2.0.

Basically what I need to be able to do is assign staff permissions on a Category by Category Basis. I.E. We have 5 Divisions within the company, each division wants to be able to manage their own articles, as admin's we want to be able to give them the ability to do this, but make sure they can't edit any other articles EG:

KB Root
-- Division 1
-- -- Div 1 Cat 1
-- -- Div 1 Cat 2
-- Division 2
-- -- Div 2 Cat 1

So Any staff member that has "Division 1" added to their profile can add Topics and/or Categories under Division 1 (And sub categories) but NOT any other KB Categories, any Staff member that has "Division 2" added to their profile can add Topics and/or Categories under Division 2 (and sub categories) but NOT any other Knowledge base categories.

So far I couldn't find any way to do this under the current beta have I missed something?, if not will it be added to future beta's? Or this isnt' possible?

Just to let others know about some of the "fun" I had getting V2 beta1 up and running which might help others who are stuck.

Loading main page default.aspx - 404 page not found

This was most odd that it should 404 and took the longest to figure out, just by reinstalling .net V2 fixed this.

Login failed for user computername\ASPNET

Add in ASPNET user to SQL database as a dbowner to get around this issue.

Potential Error: SQL Script

When Running the SQL Script I got these Errors returned:

InstantKB.NET v2.0 Beta 1 - First Impressions

One hitch with the installation on Windows Server 2003 - didn't like line 98 of the web.config trying to load "Office" assemblies. Came up with an error saying it couldn't find and/or load the necessary files. I'm assuming that this may be because I've not got any Microsoft Office component installed on my server.

When I commented out the line, InstantKB loaded fine. First impressions were as expected - it looks brilliant and I've no doubt this will be the ASP.NET driven Knowledgebase app that sets the standard. It's obvious there's been a huge amount of thought and development work done on this so far (hence the frustrating delays) but also obvious there's still a fair bit to do.

I've not had chance to play with it that much yet but there were quite a few functions that didn't seem to be playing ball. For one, I registered a new user but can't find any reference to that user in admin. I tried to logon as that user and it threw up an error. Anyway, I'll attempt to make a list of observations as I go along.

Well done Ryan on, what I'm sure will eventually be, the killer KB app everyone will want.

Ryan or James,

Will v2.0 configuration data be stored in the DB? If I recall the v1.3 configuration information was stored locally on each server. The problem I had was if I made a change to the configuration I had to go to each server and modfiy the file locall or else end users would see a mix of different information depending on what box served up the page. I had posted this in the InstantKB forum but wasn't sure if anythign like this was included in v2.0.

BTW I can't wait for v2.0!

Until we get a dedicated forum the upcoming new release, I thought I'd post a comment here.

The screenshots for KB2 look very exciting and its great to see so many new features after such a long wait.

Hopefully we will actually get a alpha or beta release to test in the near future, and I'd really like to see regular updates from now on to keep us up to date and 'on side'

Hi,

Can you comment on the User Account in v2? We are using v1.3 integrated to our store code. We are hoping that IKB 2.0 can provide some sort of Single Sign On methodology so that we can use a same user account database. I'm hoping that with .net 2, there is a way to plug in a backend user validation.
