| Issue: Intermittently unable to access attached files to private messages using v4.1.4 To recreate: - Issue is intermittent so not able to recreate every time
- User attachs a file to their private message to another forum user.
- Attachment could be as small as 1K and as large as 5MB (occurs regardless of file size)
- Receiptent clicks on the attachment, and is redirected to the forum home page instead of the file being downloaded or opened (zip or txt)
- Only option is for Adminstrator to delete the file via the Admin CP's Manage Attachments section as not accessible from anywhere.
This has happened a number of times - on two different servers that the forum has been on. In addition to getting a reply and suggestion from the makers of InstantForum, if anyone else has experienced this and determined the circumstances where this occurs, or how to fix, I would greatly appreciate it. It appears this issue was also posted on the Bug Report http://support.instantasp.co.uk/Topic11611-37-1.aspx last posting - but with no reply or fix from InstantForum people?

As per the other support ticket I opened at the same time, I have confirmed with Carlos that SP1 is applied, but the issue continues.

| I have been dealing via private email with James regarding this issue as even though I had paid for support, the My-InstantASP support incident was ignored. Applying the SP1 update resulted in receiving even worse issues regarding this - when the receiver of a private message attempts to open/view/download an attachment, the following error occurs: Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression. The statement has been terminated.
After more than a week of back and forth with James, as well as setting up a completely new test database performing the exact same steps and getting the same error, I have just determined the following which I would have assumed that the makers of this software would have clued into immediately as they should know their own database tables and how stuff links together. I was looking at the error message, and it obviously is stating that it is getting more than one result back, so I started going through the forum database tables trying to figure out what was going on as was getting no where with support. I determined that there were TWO copies of the SAME attachmentID identified in the dbo.InstantForum_AttachmentPosts table for each of these private message attachments. I looked into this further, and determined that this occurs when the sender of the private message checkmarks to KEEP a copy of the message in their SENT folder. The result: If the sender does NOT keep a copy of the message with attachment in their Sent folder, than when the receiver selects the attachment to open/view/download the attachment, the receiver is redirected to the forum's home page - just as they were BEFORE the SP1 was applied. And if the sender DOES keep a copy of the message with attachment in their Sent folder, than when the receiver selects the attachment to open/view/download the attachment, the receiver receives the error above. This should have been identfied by the developers of this forum software immediately, rather than me spending another week trying to get help on this issue - the original issue of being redirected to the forum home page when a private message attachment is attempted to be opened, as well as getting that error if the send kept a copy of the message and attachment in their Sent folder. - Joyce

| Hi Joyce, Hope your very well. We did apologize for our initialize delay via My.InstantASP. Carlos did refer this to me right away but it took me a day to reach your ticket. I do apologize for that. James and I have spent several hours investigating your initial problem and as you say we've been working with you via email for a few days to try and identify the cause. We will continue todo so. With regard to the second issue. We do duplicate the private messages one for the sender and one for the recipient. It was not entirely clear to us the problem you were receiving based on the information we received a few days back. It was only today Joyce we received some information from you that helped us replicate this problem. I'm sorry for any mis-understanding. Since replicating the problem with private message attachments we will of course work to provide a update ASAP and also include this fix within our v4.2 update due soon. Also Joyce i appreciate it took me a day to respond to your first support ticket. We do try to resound same day to all tickets however sometimes this is not possible. Also your initial email with regard to the second issue was received by us on Tues 28th at 5.49 PM GMT. James has only been investigating this issue for 3 days. I've also sent you a email Joyce with my contact details incase you wish to discuss this further and to ensure we can offer a fix for any issues within our software.
 Kindest Regards,
Ryan Healey Director / Developer

Hi Joyce, I've already apologised personally for any incovenience you felt with the initial support response and continue to do so, although you did receive a timely response I appreciate this was not satisfactory for you. I took over the ticket with and with Ryan's assistance began work on your initial issue. You then produced a second issue, which you intimated was caused in the SP1 update, and had sprang from the blue, not from a change in your input criteria, until today when you informed me this was causing the problem which arose I was unaware and was still working on the prospect of SP1 being the root of the problem. We would have been able to resolve this much sooner had the downloads you provided not been corrupted the first two times you provided them, only on my third attempt did I get a copy of your database, shortly AFTER you reported that you were ticking the retain a copy in sent items checkbox. Finally, whilst I appreciate your initial frustration, I have now been at your complete disposal for three days (Since my last post in this thread), via email, not the 7 days you state we have been working on this problem. I appreciate you are frustrated now with the continuance of your initial problem, however after extensive testing (as highlighted in my email today), this problem is almost certainly down to your local configuration either at the web or database server, and as stated if you can provide more information about your configuration or non-standard settings, we can advise of any relevance and a solution to work with that.
 Kindest Regards,
James Trott Developer

| I do have to post in reply to both of the posts above. 1. On Aug 23rd 12PM, I sent in a support ticket pointing to the community forum topic where I had identified the issue I was experiencing. 2. On Aug 24th 8:40AM, my support ticket still had no response 3. On Aug 24 10:16AM, I received a reply to the support ticket that the issue was believed to be resolved in SP1 4. As I had applied SP1, I replied Aug 24 10:27AM that this was done, but the issue was still occurring. 5. I asked again in my support instance for any further help regarding this - no reply. 6. On Aug 27 (three days later - NOT one day later), Ryan replied that they were looking into the issue. 7. That is when the direct email correspondence with James began - on August 27. Do note that the zip files I had provided were NOT corrupted at this end. The files that you finally downloaded and extracted three days later after I supplied them are the EXACT same files that were provided on August 27th. Unfortunately I have no control over your Internet access that resulted in corrupted files being downloaded. Yes I agree that we went down a completely different path for the last three days because James and Ryan did not know what the error message meant in relation to their software. And myself, although not being a developer of the software, went through the database tables and determined that their software makes duplicates of the attachment if a sender keeps a copy of the message in their Sent folder - which causes the duplicate query error. Which brings us right back to the original issue I experienced 7 days ago that I am sincerely hoping someone might provide suggestions on what could cause the issue - as I repeat here - I am not the developer of the software, and am hoping that the developers of this forum software may have an idea on what "could" cause my issue so that I can troubleshoot my server to see what the issue is as I am able to re-create the issue on another completely different server (restored my backup on another server, manually setup the program files on this server, created the web site via IIS Manager, login via http://localhost/Default.aspx , send an attachment via private message to another forum user (without keeping a copy of hte message in the senders Sent folder), STILL results in the receiver being redirected to the forum home page http://localhost after clicking on the attachment. The frustration comes from going through all of this over the last week to bring me right back to the same issue I posted about on August 23rd I would really appreciate it if someone could give me any suggestions on what would cause clicking on a private message attachment to send the forum user back to the forum home page instead of being able to download/view/open the attachment - considering topic attachments are not experiencing this issue at all. To me, there is something specific about it being a private message attachment that perhaps there is some sort of rights or setting that must be set up or could be corrupted or whatever - that if the developers could provide that, would go a LONG way towards solving this issue. - Joyce
