I've been running v4.0 RC4 for about a week.  Before releasing InstantForum.Net to end users, I've had a few folks from different departments in the company try it out.

One of the main complaints I'm getting is that when registering, the first time a user tries to enter the verification code, it fails.  Only when the verification code is entered a second time it works fine.

I currently have about 30 registered users, and half of them have reported this problem.  I just tried registering 4 new users on 4 different machines and saw the problem twice.

I had two other people with me looking at the letters and numbers to make sure it wasn't a misread of code.  Our QA team has also worked this way, in pairs, to check that the entered code is the correct one, but many still get the error on the first attempt.

I made sure I cleared my cache and turned caching off (using IE, Tools / Internet Options / Temporary Internet Files / Settings / “Every visit to the page”).

Has anyone seen this problem?  It's not that big of a deal since a new user will simply think that he/she entered the wrong code and it works on the second try, but if someone could check that there's not some obvious bug while checking the verification code, it could save users time.

Hi Emmanuel,

Many thanks for your post. We've had one to two similar reports but as yet have not been able to replicate this problem.

Are you able to replicate this consistently? If so would it be possible to get access to your installation remotely to investigate this further. Or do you have a URL for your forum if public we could use to test.

We will continue to try and replicate this problem locally and i'll keep this topic updated with any developments.

I look forward to your response,

Kindest Regards,

I sent an email to Ryan so we can setup a Webex session on a specific client where this problem occurs every time.

Ryan and I spent half an hour on a WebEx session on my Production servers.

Turns out the problem was a 20 minute difference between the web servers and the SQL server - this was causing the ASP.Net sessions to expire after 1 minute in some cases.  With the ASP.Net session gone, there was no way to validate the verification code.

The solution for me was to tell our IT department to make sure our Production servers are on the correct date/time (the time protocol is a good idea here).

Ryan can give more details and will create a knowledge base article on this issue.

20 minutes!  Wow, that's a huge difference.  GREAT find, not an easy one.
