Endless loading spinners within InstantForum

Hey all,
I'm getting endless spinners whenever any of the listed "Popular Tags" are clicked. There is no error. The thing here is, when a tag is clicked on the proper results momentarily show up then the loading spinner pops up and never goes away.

Not sure how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

InstantForum Problem

Hi Rob (i think),

I'm sincerely sorry to hear of the trouble. This is a bug that existed in InstantForum 2010 and can occur if you attempt to access InstantForum 2010 in newer browsers and certain posts being returned contain special characters. We have of course long since resolved this and have not seen this issue again since our 2012 release.

I've linked below the fix we prepared at the time for our 2010-5 release...
https://downloads.instantasp.co.uk/InstantForum2010/IFNET2010-5_JSONEncodingIssue.zip

Please take a back-up of your entire Bin folder to be safe and then replace the various DLLs.

I hope this helps. If the problem continues don't hesitate to respond.

Thank you so much, Ryan! I did as you instructed and it sort of works. :)

It stopped the endless spinners and some of the tags display properly. Unfortunately, some tags throw an "Unexpected Problem Occurred" error (when I turn the custom errors off). Maybe nothing else can be done unless we upgrade.

Thanks Rob,

I'm pleased to hear my previous suggestion helped. Sorry to hear of the new problem. I believe the new behavior you describe is a problem with the URL rewriting and your tags containing special characters that are not allowed in URLs (2010 did let a few characters through).

If this sounds correct you can try running the script below against your database to update your tags and remove the problem characters. You may need to add the characters that are causing problems to the list.

DECLARE @intTagID int
DECLARE @strTagKeyword nvarchar(400)
DECLARE MSGCURSOR CURSOR FOR
SELECT TagID, TagKeyword FROM InstantASP_Tags

OPEN MSGCURSOR

FETCH NEXT FROM MSGCURSOR
INTO @intTagID, @strTagKeyword

WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN

SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, ' ', '-')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '+', '-')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, ':', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, ';', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '&', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '''', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '\', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '/', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '"', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '?', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, ' ', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '.', '')
SET @strTagKeyword = REPLACE(@strTagKeyword, '--', '-')

UPDATE InstantASP_Tags SET
InstantASP_Tags.TagKeywordEncoded = @strTagKeyword WHERE TagID = @intTagID

FETCH NEXT FROM MSGCURSOR
INTO @intTagID, @strTagKeyword

END
-- tidy cursor
CLOSE MSGCURSOR
DEALLOCATE MSGCURSOR

GO

Also if your tags contain a full stop (.) at the end this can cause problems. Whilst a full stop is allowed in a URL if it appears at the very end IIS seems to get confused so to be safe simply remove any full stops from the URL encoded version of the tag.

Again this has since been resolved with our newer releases but this may help with the 2010 release.

The tags all look fine, Ryan. I ran the script anyway, just in case. Sadly, it didn't have any effect.

I have attached the raw error notification if this helps.

Thanks for you all your help. It is greatly appreciated.
